Hi all,
Ok, I think I'm having one of those days. I have corel 10 and I have started having just today these error messesges.

first one is: There was an error saving the command item file to the workspace named '_defalt'; some configurations may be lost

second one is: Error creating temporary backup. Cannot save to the chosen directory.

I'm not even trying to save, just trying to get rid of the first message.

Third one is: Error writing C: program files 1 corel/graphisc10/draw/auto back up - of- graphis/cdr file.

Does anyone have an idea whats going on and how do I fix this.

Thanks Cindy

Cindy,

I'm not sure I have a complete answer, but a little information might be helpful.
If you have made a change in a previously saved file (that is, it has a filename instead of Graphics1) and have not saved it for 10 minutes then Corel automatically attempts to makes a backup file. While it never worked very well in DRAW 10(perfect in 12), if your operating system or Corel crashes, then when restarted, Draw finds that autobackup and brags: "I found an autobackup, do you want me to open it?"

In your description, something is interferring with Corel's ability to do that. For instance, if you deleted, renamed or protected the folder into which it is trying to make the backup, those error messages would be expected. Other scenarios: you are running out of hard disk space(?); you, or someone, has told Corel to place AutoBackups on a network drive and your network is not working or that PC is turned off(?).

First, I'd say shut everything down and try again; but, I assume you've already tried that. Next, I'd try to assign a different hard drive, network driver or at least another folder for your AutoBackups[see below]; do a Disk Cleanup; do a DeFrag; completely uninstall and reinstall Corel 10. And finally, upgrade to Corel 12 and I seriously doubt if you'll ever have that problem again.

Tools>Options>General I think is where Corel 10 allows you to assign location for your AutoBackups. I have several versions of Corel on my PCs, but Corel 10 was so bad I chucked it as soon as I could.

Thanks for the information. Next day after everything is shut down overnight no more problem, but still I need to see about upgrading corel. Question is how much more learning experence will I need to switch to 12. There is still things in 10 that I have not mastered.

Thanks Cindy

Cindy,

I can think of only one significant change in the interface with Corel 12. [Symbols docker has been "moved" to Text>Insert Text]. Other than that, all 12 interface components are the same as 10. There are several new features, but you don't have to use them and 12 is just much faster and more stable. So there is no learning curve.

Oops! I didn't go back to see if there was any indication you are not on 32bit windows (XP or 2000); 12 will not work on 16bit windows(95, 98, Me); which is one reason it is faster and more stable!

I do use windows XP. So you think corel 12 is a good investment..

Thanks Cindy

Absolutely---moving from 10 to 12 would be an excellent investment.

Roy,

Okay, Okay.... Now that I have all of my operating systems up to date with Windows XP, it's time to move from Corel Draw 10 to 12. You are so right! I have suffered long enough with the quirkiness of 10.

Did I see somewhere that 13 will be out soon? (If so what's soon?)

Ken,

I've been accepted as a beta tester but haven't received anything to test. I'd guestimate it will be about 9 months before 13 could hit the market.
