I'm not 100% convinced that it is software related. I think it has something to do with the Job Buffer of the main board. The fact that you don't have the problem helps to re-enforce that. Or It could be some background software interfering with the download. I had an IS300 that would occasionally go haywire, It would engrave normally then all of a sudden it would go off, mirroring text and engraving lines all over the place like it was possesed! I change the antivirus software that I was using, and it never did it again after that... As I said to Harvey, I know that the bug is there and i just work around it if needed. Even with its odd quirks I still prefer 98 over G5.

Comments on a few posts.

Static charges can do very funny things, from locking up a keyboard to locking up a computer to shutting it down. A few solutions are, getting an anti glare screen to go in front of the monitor, attaching its wire to the computer frame and touching that first. Attaching a wire to a piece of plastic and the frame of the computer and touching that first helps also. There is only one type of plastic that is totally non-conductive, forgot what it is called, but the others have a slight bit of conductivity, enough to discharge a static charge without feeling it. They make anti-static mats and wrist rests also. As long as it comes with a wire to attach to the computers frame, it is an anti-static unit. On the NH Orbiter a static charge touching the mechanism or keyboard will lock it up virtually every time.

Weird things can be caused by anti-virus software. My engraving computers are never on line so no anti-virus software is active. (The computers that create files that are transferred to those machines are protected.) I have never had that problem yet.

I have had a few jobs that went to very wrong places, including to the end of the limits of the table and locked up the controller. Reboot, send the job through again, same thing. Would have to re-layout the job from scratch and it was fine.

Ever have a job that when you highlight the text and replace it, you have very little intercharactor spacing no matter what you do? Delete the text and hit backspace 4 or 5 times and it fixes the problem. I believe it is that some letters were pull kerned and that did not disappear and became the default. Backspacing the nothing at the beginning of the line solves it.

OK, I think I have a good allturnitive to the columns feature. Try this, it works in both G98 and G5:

- Go to manual mode and select left justification for text.
- Click out on your layout (towards the left side of the plate) to start a baseline. You will notice it runs all the way to the other side of the plate.
- Go to the baseline length box and enter the disired width of the column such as 2".
- Click on the text icon and then start typing in the column. Hit enter to create the next line. The base line should stay the same as you make the first column.
- To make the other columns, there are two ways to do this:
1. Click on the slection tool and then click on the column. It should turn all red.
2. Hold the control and shift key and click on the column and drag it off to the right until you have it placed where you want it and let up on the button. Holding the control & shift keys should allow you to drag the column on axis and also copy it.
The second way is for those who have Graphic level in G98 or G5 Discovery:
1. Click on the slection tool and click on the column so it turns red.
2. Click on duplication tools and select the multi copy function. In there, you can tell it how many columns you want and the spacing.

-Once the columns are made, click on the next column so only that one is red.
- Click on the text tool and just start typing. Hit enter to go to the next line. This allows you to easily create columns of different lengths.

Hope this helps
