Full Version: New Mexico get-together

Calling all Albuquerque/Santa Fe members:

A friend and I had a great idea to have a get-together of all of the Albq/Santa Fe-area members who are interested. If you are interested in having a Saturday-morning breakfast confab to meet, share ideas/jokes/stupid things you've done, and just have a good time, post your interest here. Projected dates are February 10, 17, or 24. We are thinking Mimi's Cafe, in the @25! center at the intersection of I-25 and Jefferson. If we can gather enough attendees, we can probably get their back room for a brunch at, say, 10:30 a.m.
Let me know!

Nancy

Nancy,

Don't you know when you're in this industry you are required to work on Saturdays? :P

Dave, unfortunately there's more truth than poetry to that! But we do take a Saturday off occasionally - gotta have some relief from the stress of two full-time 40-hour jobs and this work too!

So will you be there?

BTW, is it my imagination or is this forum running slower than molasses in January in Maine this morning?

Nancy,

I'd love to partake in your event, but Missouri is a bit more than a day's commute for me, plus I am open for business on Saturdays. I hope you have a great get together. As David said, take pictures.

As far as the forum running slow, it seems to be fine from my vantage point. There have been some slow sessions this past week on a couple of evenings. David L. is looking into other server options from his existing hosting companies.

Good idea. I didn't know there were any other members in NM. Count me in except for Feb. 24 when I'll be in Las Vegas. Looking forward to it.

Chris,

We've settled on February 17, at 10:30 a.m., at Mimi's. I suspect you know where it is, but if you need directions, you can PM me or send me an e-mail at dandnspecialties@msn.com.

We look forward to it. Will your wife be along?

Nancy,

Does Mimi's still have the coconut-coated Mahi-Mahi on the menu?

Can you tell I haven't eaten breakfast yet? :P

David, I'm not sure about the mahi-mahi. I am usually there for breakfast only, but I'll check and let you know. Their quiche is TO DIE FOR though, and what I usually order.

(As an aside, your initials throw me for a loop every time I see them--they are the same as hubby's, and every time I see your initials, for a millisecond I think that he's on this forum too.)

Nancy,

I've seen their quiche. Lookin' goood!

I'll have to try it out.

Sorry to throw you for a loop with my initials. I had no control over that decision. :-)

What's your husband do for a living? Maybe he should be an EE member.

I think he manufactures sawdust, but I'll let Nancy answer that.

Nancy,

Have you ever seen them together in the same room at the same time? (devil)

Hubby is a 28-year veteran of the United States Navy, and has been woodworking for about 47-48 years, having learned his basic skills from his father in a little one-car garage. His Navy stint was in electronics, but his last duty station turned into a stint as the squadron carpenter, as his squadron was moved to occupy new hanger spaces and he was allowed to do what he loves best--make sawdust, building desks and filing cabinets, etc. He even got a Navy Achievement Medal and a Navy Commendation Medal out of it!

Since retirement from the Navy, and our relocation to New Mexico, he/we have done custom cabinets and furniture (for ourselves and others), he worked for several years for a countertop manufacturer, and for the last 9 years he has worked at Woodworker's Supply, first in retail sales (he was the store manager for about 4 years), and has now moved into the Pro Sales Division selling all those great machines and tools to professionals. If you've had the privilege of calling WWS, you may have spoken to him.

At the end of '07, we are both retiring from our "day jobs" and doing this laser work on as much of a full-time basis as we can do. We have found that the woodworking and the laser business mesh very well, as we have unlimited access to the woods and designs needed, and two lasers turn out a lot of work. We did an order of 2,000 Christmas ornaments in two weeks, from design to cutting to color-fill to finish to delivery...made for some late nights and thoroughly messed up our Thanksgiving weekend, but we did it!

No, I've never seen Engravin' Dave and my spouse in the same room, (I don't think we live that close together), but from the looks of the pic I saw of Dave on the main page here, the two of them don't look anything alike, so I don't think I'd get them mixed up. :D He's a pretty special guy!

Just for information and clarification: this get-together is NOT limited to laserheads. This same information and invitation has been posted on Sawmill Creek, Family Woodworking, and Women in Woodworking, as well as WOE. We aren't trying to limit attendance to any one group of people--just doing this as a way to get together with other people in our area of like or similar talents and interests.

Crossing laser engraving folks with woodworking folks is a natural---that's the way hubby and I got into laser work, by doing some work for a lady who owned the laser (and her for us), then we were able to buy it after she passed away.

This will be a very eclectic group---I hope!!

Hi Nancy,

I don't know if my wife will be there or not. She works for Dillards and rarely knows her schedule more than a week at a time. She will be going to Vegas with me this time (on vacation).

Dave and all, the get-together was great, although sparsely attended. Aside from LOML and me, only one other engraver was there, Chris Tegard from here in Albuquerque. We had one lady from WoodCentral/Women in Woodworking, one man from WoodCentral/Family Woodworking, and another couple from several woodworking and pen forums that we've known for a while. We are planning to try another one, probably in April, and hope to have more there.

I couldn't figure out how to post the pictures here--guess I need tutoring! As a matter of fact, if there's a way to post a tutorial on here, and make it a sticky, it would help some of us newbies.

If you let me know how to post the pictures, I'll put them up here too.

Nancy
