Grrrrr!</a></h1><a name="a857_1"></a><p><b>From: ARAMember</b> [<a href="lmessages.php?webtag=EE&msg=857.1">#1</a>]<br /> 20 Feb 2005<br /><b>To: ALL</b></p> <p>I do about 300 trophies a week during the winter for Ice and Snow events, and a M~A~J~O~R problem we have had is the loosening up of the nuts, rods, and trophies when they are exposed to cold. If you build a double pedistal trophy with marble, in a 70 degree building, and let it sit on a table in a tent on the ice in 20 degree air for as little as half an hour, the contraction of the parts makes the trophy literally "fall apart."</p> <p>This challenge has been met by instaling a heater in my trailer to keep the trophies at temp during transport, and "making" the customers display the trophies and present them in the bar, resort, etc, where the events are held. However, when the racers win the trophy, and put it in the trailer for the ride home, it always loosens up, and EVEN THOUGH I had nothing to do with them finding their trophy in pieces, it's the old addage, guilt by association, and the "trophy guy" wasn't doing his job.</p> <p>Well, I challenged my dad to come up with an idea! He started by locktighting everything. Which took FOREVER, and solved nothing. The trophy was still loose and rattled, the spines just didn't come apart. Then, he did hours of research and designing, and came up with an idea! A washer, that was concave, and flattened out when tightened, creating a springlock effect, and staying tight even with the contraction. I then added a rubber washer to absorb even more of the slack. Well, we we're just about ready for the patent office..... and the new issue of McMaster Carr arrived.
