Hi Gang,

I got my bulk Cermarc the other day. It occurs to me I do not have an air brush to spray it with.
Anyone have any recommendations for an air brush?

Thanks

Check with the hobby stores or an auto paint supplier. If you don't have a small aircompressor, such as the one that supplies air assist, they have setups that use small pressurized cans the size of a butane refill.

Go to an arts and crafts or maybe even HomeDepot .. They make an air can with a resevoir for painting . Cheap mans air brush.

Thank you for the response,

I have been to home depot. I had not thought of an auto supply store....
I'll check into that.
However More specifically, what features if any do I want in an air brush?
What seperates one from another?
I have a philosophy that I follow most of the time, and that is DON'T BUY CHEAP TOOLS, so I am wanting to know what makes a GOOD airbrush... :)

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it.

Air brushes are very handy around a sign shop. I am fond of
the Badger brand. Seems to be a good great quality at a fair price.
Check out Ebay, may find a great buy.

We use Paasche brushes and a small hobby type compressor for this.
We also dont use cermark but use a re-useable metal marking compound , when we wash off the residue , we do it over a bucket and boil off the water to reclaim unused powder. when spraying , we thin the Cerdec and the other stuff with either isopropyl alcohol or just plain distilled water.
We have however found airbrushing is not the greatest solution for anything other than larger areas , a small paintbrush works better for coating pens etc - thining the marking compound makes for a much better even application. Too thick and the streaks you get tend to affect the engraving. Most problematic for us is the fact that the coating often doesnt adhere well and air assist actually blows it off - thus we dont use it when "cerdecing"

I haven't used the air brush yet, but all I need to do is unplug my air assist and plug in the airbrush. When I have the work to justify another compressor, I'll have the money to pay for it.

Be sure that you have a regulator and stay within the max pressure recommended by the airbrush.

I actually dabble in airbrushing a bit and have about 4 of them. I'm toying with the idea of selling one since I don't use them as much anymore. But one thing I don't do is use the Cermark in them. I never had a large enough area to use it, I just use a paint brush. But if I decide to sell I'll make sure this is the first place I sell it on. Thought I'd really like to try and get back into it. We'll see.....

Kate,
What airbrushes do you have? What are the features? Do I want double or single action? Which brand is the Cadillac?

Thanks

I have:
badger
paasche
iwata

My opinon?
I love my paasche an iwata.
My suggestion?
the iwata eclipse. That's "my cadillac" or so I call it that. I only use it for the "really good stuff".

their website: www.iwata-medea.com

But like I said that's my opinion. A single action paasche would suit your needs. Personally I don't like badgers. I just never have and rarely touch mine.

As for features? I think you'll find what you need in the iwata "eclipse". (make sure it's the high performance series) You'll be using more "liquid" than the little cup on the top holds.
Glad to help with any other questions you may have.

Kate
Thank you. Does the iwata eclipse handle "thicker" products? I'm primarily going to be using it for Cermarc.
I know I could brush the Cermarc on but I hear you get a better coat when spraying.....

Thank

That I'm not sure of. As I said I dont' use my airbrushes for Cermarc. I would suggest trial and error. Since with an airbrush you aren't really going to wreck it. Try what you can and dilute it with whatever cermarc suggests, water i'm assuming and do extra coats. But typically my airbrushes do a thicker paint substance, like automotive paints.

Rodney

you said in your post.

" Most problematic for us is the fact that the
coating often doesnt adhere well and air assist actually blows it off
- thus we dont use it when "cerdecing""

In talking with the Cerdec (aka CerMark) folks there is a product on
the market that is formulated to correct this issue. I have had the
same problem on high polish Stainless Steel boat parts. Dave Smith
of CerMark suggested the use of product LMC 6038. It contains
Ox Gaul (sp) which causes it to stick bettere to slick surfaces.
Web site is www.cerdecmark.com

I don't know anything about airbrushing, but after reading this thread I saw the following auction on the local online auction in my area and thought I'd post for all to see. The seller won't ship, but if any of you want to bid I'd be willing to pick it up and ship it for you if you are the winning bidder and would just pay me for the postage.

Laura,

I just checked and it looks like I could get it for $50 plus about $10 shipping.

I don't NEED an airbrush, but it seems cheap to start a new hobby or use to touch up the scratches on my car... lol

How could/would we pay you? Do you take credit cards (I would add a few $$ to cover your processing charges)?

Thanks for the great offer!

If you are high bidder you can pay me via PayPal. I think my processing charge is 3% of the total + $0.30. Or you could mail a check. I wonder if it would fit in the Flat Rate Priorty Mail boxes from the post office? That would only be $7.70 to ship plus insurance/tracking if you want it.

We can figure something out. :)

An air brush is the only way to go with cerdec. You will want to get an EXTERNAL MIX airbrush because the cerdec clogs up an internal mix gun VERY quickly. That is the reason the pre-mixed spray cans were no good; you spray for 10 seconds and spend 3 minutes cleaning out the nozzle to continue for another 10 seconds. I have a Paashe air brush, and it is great; it has not clogged yet. You can order one direct off the 'net.
