Your answer will help settle a bet around here. Thank you!

Jeanette,

I would have no problem with giving up a holiday weekend for a seminar, as long as there were ancilliary activities that would make it feel like a holiday, i.e. BBQ, round of golf, or that type of thing :-)

Business and pleasure :-)

I knew I could count on you guys! Believe me, if the poll doesn't go the way I expected it would, I'm not telling daddy it ever existed! ;-)

I personally prefer that events are not held close to holiday weekends 1) I do need a few none work days a year and 2) travel expenses are always higher around holidays. My two cents.

If you enjoy what you are doing, it isn't "work"..... if you don't enjoy it, change direction! Life is to short to go through doing things you hate.

I do not want my 'work/job' to become 24/7 and it has nothing to do with if I enjoy what I'm doing or not. Family will always come first - Life is to short to miss time with them, specially just to make an extra buck. A day off here and there (even a few hours) allows me to 'clear my database' (i.e. brain), recharge 'my batteries' (i.e. rest, look at goals) and do routine maintence (i.e. nonwork exercise).

Steve
Do you work holidays? How many hours per week is your shop open.
How many employees do you have? Are you the only engraver in the shop? I am just wondering how you handle it when you want to take off for some vacation - this is always a problem for shops with just one or two
employees especially when only one runs the equipment.

Of course family comes first... I was only referring to your comment that you need non-workdays.... Perhaps, depending on where the session was held, you could take the family for a fun mini-vacation and write some of it off. Let Uncle Sam pick up a part of your entertainment budget.

You kinda ruffled some feathers ;). I never want my business to be 24/7 which is how I felt you implied - and it has nothing to do with liking what I do. I love decorating wedding cakes, but I want days off from that too. Other family members are not self-employed so many activities have to be planned around holidays so they don't have to use so many vacation days. That is why I prefer (they were running a poll) not to have training on holidays (specially if it's only for one day). I'd reconsider if they want to offer the class apx. 60-70 feet below water off Cozumel's coast line :).

I dove Cozumel once, it was amazing.

If I could tangent a minute... How do you make Frosting Roses? Someone said to use shortening in the mix to get it thicker, seems like you'd make it taste bad that way. Just wondering what you do.

For me, I voted that I'd do it, because Lasering is more of a hobby for me... I have a non-related full time job. If you were to ask about training for my full time job on a holidy, I would have said I wouldn't want to do it. Lasering is what I do on my time off anyway, so on a holidy would be OK.

Just clarifying.

Since I am in a mall, the only closed days are Christmas and Easter. It would not matter to me since I could not attend anyway.

It is a bummer trying to cover the store for the ARA show. Sometimes I can, sometimes not.

I dove a week there and would go back in a second. Roses ... I use royal frosting. Email me at zonas at earthlink dot net if you have more questions - don't want to get in trouble for being off topic ;)

Zona,

I don't think you're off-topic. You're just discussing the dessert Jeanette will be serving on the Labor Day dive trip/seminar :-)

My mother was SCUBA diver. I used to snorkel around and wait for the "real" divers to bring up the abalone, scallops and lobster.

I mean, hey! Someone has to taste the stuff to make sure it's good enough for everyone else.

Oh, and it was! B-)

Jeanette,
You said "I knew I could count on you guys! Believe me, if the poll doesn't go the way I expected it would, I'm not telling daddy it ever existed! ;-) "

I have a hunch Daddy already knows about it..... but I am sure I am not the only one wondering just exactly what the "bet" is.

Personally, I would attend on a holiday except Thankgiving, Christmas or New Years Day. I might possibly include the 4th of July, all the others are not significant enough "to ME" ( meaning to others they may be ) to worry about.

Unfortunately, being stuck in the middle of the Ocean makes it difficult to attend any show/seminar other than the biggies, however, we could do some great diving :-)

Shaddy,
How are things in the Pacific Northwet?
Anyway, you said "For me, I voted that I'd do it, because Lasering is more of a hobby for me... I have a non-related full time job. If you were to ask about training for my full time job on a holidy, I would have said I wouldn't want to do it. Lasering is what I do on my time off anyway, so on a holidy would be OK."
What if it were your own business as opposed to a fulltime "job"? Would that make a difference?
