Full Version: Engrave Lab

I bought the Engravelab E6 so that I could use it with Windows XP. I installed it and put the security donggle on it. The problem I am having is when I try to verify that the dongle is okay, it is not. My question is, do I have to install my original Engrave Lab and then install this over it? When I installed E6 it didn't look for or ask for an older version.

Any suggestions?

If you have a parallel port dongle and you have a printer plugged into it, you may need to have your printer turned on for EngraveLab to recognize the dongle. I don't think you should have to install your old version of EngraveLab first, but I really don't know.

Is this a new copy of 6.0/6.1 or and upgrade version?

USB or Parallel Dongle.

Ok I have to ask...
What is a dongle?

A dongle is basically an electronic key. Software vendors providel you a full up version of their software and dependent on the key that you buy you are limited to your ability to gain access to that portion of the software. The key is plugged into the parallel port or usb port.

Oh, you lucky person not to know what a dongle is.

It is a small connector with a chip in it that attaches to the parallel port. (There are now some that will go into a USB port.)

When you run a program that requires a dongle, the program boots and checks for the codes contained in the dongle before it will run. It is basically a copy protection system. No dongle-no work.

My argument has always been, if you need a dongle, allow setups on any machine but allow the program to interface to the engraver only with the donglised computer. That would make it far more consistent with the way shops are run, and still protect the program from being used on multiple machines.

First of all, let me say I did call Engrave Lab today but of course I got voice mail.
I paid for the up-grade only but when I installed the program it did not ask for a current copy of the software. Besides that, the older version does not work with XP, so I didn't install it first.
The dongle is a parallel port but the hook up to the printer is network.
The book says "The output device and dongle do NOT have to be plugged into the same port. For example, if the output device is connected to a USB port, the parallel port dongle may still be connected to the parallel port."
Also, when using Engrave Lab before, I never turned on the printer unless I was going to print to the regular ink printer and Engrave Lab always worked. I did disconnect it anyway today but it didn't help.
The book also says that the most common hardware devices that interfere with the security device are network cards and sound cards. I disconnected the network card and checked to see if the dongle showed up. No.
The only other thing that it can be from what I am reading is a new security password. The ppwk in the box says that after 15 trial days you must enter a permanent password. But, it says if that were not done then EngraveLab will cease to function, and it will not be possible to launch EngraveLab. I am able to launch it.

I just saw something else. it says: NOTE: When installing under Windows XP or 2000, please verify that you have administrative permissions. Otherwise, Windows will prevent the installation of the dongle support software.

It was a brand new Dell that I never did anything to other than use for the Roland machine and install Corel and a few other programs only. How do I know if I have Administrative Permissions??

There was a set of "Attention" instructions in the software pack I received with E6.

"Do not install the dongle until after the program has been installed and the computer has been rebooted. Otherwise driver problems may occur."

You may have to uninstall and reboot and reinstall per these instructions.

Hope this helps.

I believe that I did it that way since I had the new computer at home and installed the program there. After it was installed I brought the dongle home and tried the program to make sure it worked. After that I put the dongle back on the old computer and pushed through baseball season. Now I am finally ready to get everything updated....

If you did not set up other users, you are the administrator. When you set up additional users you can specify if they have administrator privileges.

Found out the problem with the Engrave Lab working with Windows XP. I bought Engrave Lab 6.4 so that I could use Engrave Lab with Windows XP BUT the installation CD does not include the drivers for XP. I had to go to their web site and download the XP package to make it work. Nice to know AFTER my computer guy checked ports, printers, etc.
Now I have Engrave Lab working to both the Meistergram and the Laser but my regular D14 won't send to the Meistergram.

One other problem I have is Engrave Lab is not grabbing the fonts from the CD like it should. Even when I tell it where the font is, it doesn't go get it. The program sure has changed from 4.1 to 6.4!!!!!!!!!

On your Windows XP system, did your D1.4 software communicate with your engraver before you got EngraveLab working? I have never heard if anyone has ever been able to get D1.4 working under Windows XP, but I just guessed there would probably be problems with doing that.

We had it working before we got Engrave Lab working. After a very long time today we found out why it wouldn't work. Under XP you CANNOT have any other printers/machines hooked up to the same com port you are using. I still had the drivers in this computer from the Roland machine. Once we deleted it from the printers D14 worked just fine!

Time to add another card to the computer I guess. I have 2 LPT, 5 serial and 4 usbs hooked to mine to run the entire office.

Mark, have you considered setting up a cheap pc with lots of memory to use as a print server on a small network?

Won't slow down your regular work and makes the printers available to everyone.

Also may speed up YOUR machine.....

I am running multiple printers through the parallel port with WinXP Pro and a switchbox.

The serial port seems to be a dead port as far as my old SummaSketch tablet. Even with special downloaded program from SummaSketch.(Worked fine on ME.)

The USB ports seem to need to be set up to each printer, (each port separately).
