Full Version: The order that started it all.

Here's the order that started it all for me. Marty Ried with ESPN2 stops in and asks us to build, as he put it, the trophy God would present to Mother Theresa.

$14,000 budget, presentation in 4 weeks.

I started with a Brazillian Mahogony base, hand crafted and coated with 7 coats of laquer. It had insets where brass plates would be mounted. Then, topped it with a hand polished cup, with a turning custom made for the top, that held a hand made glass eagle. And to top it off, we had the wingtips dipped in 24 carat gold.

It was the make or break order. And the point at which I decided that BD Trophy would never provide less that the best as long as I owned it.

I still remember my insurance agent at the time stopping by and seeing it in the showroom about a week before presentation. He made me get an extra rider for $20k untill the trophy was out of the building.

When the trophy was delivered to the track the day of the race, Marty shook my hand and told me it was up there with the Borg Warner Trophy, I figured we had impressed him. When I found out that the Borg Warner Trophy was valued at over 1 million dollars, and read the history of it, I knew I had picked the right business to be in.
