Okay everyone..
I'm not a computer wiz.. so if this question is insane, please let me know...
I have a customer that wants to send me an AutoCad drawing for some industrial tags... I tried to open it, but none of my programs are responding..
What should I do to get this to open.. or what should he save it as for me to be able to see it??
this is a silly question, isn't it..
Thanks, Dixie

What program are you trying to open in.
If CorelDraw, try importing, NOT opening.

I tried importing it into CorelDraw... it comes up with an importing error stating that there was a problem reading the file...
I've tried every program I have!!!

What is the extension of the file? If it is .EPS use the PS filter in Corel, not the EPS filter.
What version of Corel do you use? I have some .DWG files that will not open or import in 9 but come in in 12. I have found that some cleanup may be necessary, single lines come in as 17 repeats.

Harvey..
I'm using CorelDraw 11.
The extension is a DWG file..

Ask him to save it (export it) as a DXF, I think Corel has an easier time with those. Not sure it can do DWG at all.

The DWG file is what gave me fits. It is the one that imported with the 17 lines for each line. I had to use version 12 to get it in.
See if you have a DWG import filter in 11. If you do and still get the error message you will need version 12. Or send the file to me, I will import it and save it as version 9, (a safe version).

Okay...
First of all.. Thanks for all of your help! This forum really is awesome.
Second.. my customer faxed me the information after unsuccessfully emailing the other version.
Now, I would really like to open this file so I can see the exact dimensions, but I still can't.
The file size is a 2.2 MB.. for some reason... and i've been unsuccessful at trying to reduce it, considering I can't even open it.
I would love to email it to someone, but if it's too big, i completely understand.. some company's mailboxes are usually full!
Hopefullly this made sense!
Thanks,
Dixie

A lot of mail systems will not take any file over 960K, they just dump it. I believe my website is set up for large files.
You can give it a try forummail accentonengraving com
Of course insert the at and period.

It zig-zags up and down for a total of 17 lines. In other words 18 nodes.
When viewed on AutoCad, it only shows one line with two nodes. My customer has AutoCad, his customer supplied the drawing.
Plays havoc on the laser when cut as a vector. I had to set to snap to nodes and redraw every line to laser it. [Then, after the piece was done, the customer's customer informed me that the drawing was not accurate, I needed to go with the dimensions. The drawing was about .015 off on average.]

I thought I posted the solution to the autocad file in Corel(9)., but do not see it here. Maybe I posted it in the wrong place or emailed it.
Be sure you have the import filter set to show the input filter settings. Then select '1 unit = 1 inch' and 'reduce nodes' set. That will give the exact dimensions and a line will have a line and a point set at the end of a line. The point will be ignored even in vector cutting.
I wrote a program long time ago a to optimize the cutting path in a PLT file. Does anyone know if there is one for Corel that takes colors into account? With layouts that contain rulers that have 120 markers it is a bummer to manually optimize the path and get the lines in the right direction to cut fast.
