There will be no need to spellcheck anymore after reading this. Seriously, read it. You will be amazed how smart you really are.

Dee,

Just show them the above test to prove that correct spelling is over-rated, and that their recipient should be just fine with the spelling you selected for them.

If I don't need spell check any more, why does it keep popping up when I go to post a message?

Infact, I was able to read your version of the message faster than if the letters were in the correct order. I guess I wasn't looking for a misspeled word.

Thanks

Hello Everyone,
I also find the spell check annoying. I don't mind one bit, if I make a little mistake when I do a posting. I wish we at least had to option of disabling it. I looked and thought that I did it, but it still popped up.
Oh well, I love the forum, and if that is all I have to deal with, then so be it.
Have a nice weekend everyone.
Barb

Barbara,

Did you try to disable spell check from your preferences, under "My Controls" or just try to disable within the posting field?

The set preferences may override an attempt to disable, post-by-post.

I know I'm the weird one but misspelled words send shivers down my spine! >.<  I LOVE Spell Check & how easy it is for folks to use it these days!

What really gets me going, though? Darn text messaging.

Text messaging has ruined my children for life! I'm hoping that some time between now & their first college essay, they figure out that the word for does not = 4 and that you cannot be replaced by U.

I agree with you Jeanette. Spell check is such a simple tool to use. My kid sends a note, and you can't believe how bad his grammer and spelling are. Sure glad we are footing the bill for college.

Jeanette,
I'm with you. Wrong spelling and poor grammar make me crazy. On the subject of text messaging - have you noticed how quickly their fingers fly? Amazing!

While we are discussing spelling/grammar, what really disappoints me is the number of times I see the word "lose" spelled "loose" and "no" spelled as "know" or vice versa.

Of course in the South you also get a lot more of I "seen" as well.

Just makes me wonder if anyone was awake in sKool. :-)

I'm glad to hear other folks have noticed that. I was hoping my kids weren't just typing really, really fast so I couldn't read what they were "saying"!

I'm going to let them keep thinking that I'm looking over their shoulder as they type but, truth be told, it's too painful to try to figure out what all their "abbreviations" mean.

Now that I'm on my soapbox (those of you with teenagers can, hopefully, relate), why is "kewl" so much better to type than "cool"? I might be tempted to forgive "4" for "for" since it saves two keystrokes but "kewl" for "cool"? Doesn't make sense. I guess I'm just old.

Has anyone read Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss? I really enjoyed that book -- especially the introduction. Finally! Someone who understood me! :S

I'm a terrible literary critic, per my brother. He said the book wasn't worth the time it took him to read it (didn't cost him anything since I loaned him mine). Anyway, that's my disclaimer for any of you who rush out to buy the book based on my review up top! :-)

Jeanette,

I think the use of non-word "kewl" is to convey the verbal pronunciation, which would be more like "coooooool".

The sad news is, once words are pronounced/spelled incorrectly, over a long enough period, they become accepted as being correct.

It's enough to make me have a nucular meltdown. :-)

Uh.... just because it is different and the kids know it will get on your nerves? :S

You're not kidding. I can't count how many times in a week I tell people the cost to do an "engravement on a chain" Translation - how much does it cost to put my name on that keychain. I've heard it so much I actually looked it up in the Webster. I was relieved it wasn't there.

Speaking of things that catch on, what about being disrespected? When did it become OK to say "he disrespected me".

Jer,

From what I've seen, that term is usually used by gang members, who have no concept of respect.

Dee,

That's what you get for "conversating" with them!
