Full Version: How Do You Market?

In a few months, we will be celebrating the end of our 3rd year in business with a for-real storefront. It's been a great (ad)venture so far. We have state-of-the-art equipment, the best showroom in our region, a reputation for quality and we continue to build market share almost on a monthly basis.

To take our business to the next level, we are exploring new ideas including additional ways of marketing beyond what we are doing now. Some of you may have seen my recent inquiries in conjunction with email newsletters and the like. This is just one of several things we are considering.

My question to YOU is...what are you doing NOW to bring in new customers? With no offense intended, I'm not interested in what we SHOULD be doing or what professional marketing experts would suggest. I already know those things.

I'm interested in what YOU are doing, right now, to bring in more customers; hopefully on a daily basis.

The best thing for us is to meet as many people we can. If I see a friend or a good customer in town I make an effort to greet them and if they have a friend with them I introduce myself. I usually do not say anything about the business unless they bring it up. I know when we part they will talk me and what I do. I bet within a month I will see 60% of the new people I have met in the shop. Seems to work.

Samples and Gifts? I made those Shuffle Puzzles and left them on break tables at my other job (but you can probably "donate" them to dr's/dentists offices). Drop off marble etchings with your website/prices etched on it at flooring places (some will let you display it on the counter, especially if you use their bosses photo, or photo if store), Look up caterers in the area and etch/lable some of there stuff at cost and have them spread the word for you (gamble on if they actually will or not, but if you charge cost, at least you're not out money). Do your local flowershops have someone to etch vases and glasses? Good source for selling wedding/funeral/anneversary items (memorial marble etching, champagne bottle/glasses...). Local photography studio for placing their photos on marble (they might just want to sub it out to you without advertising for you so the poeple don't just bringyou stuff bypassing them, but that should still be acceptable)

Even if the local stores don't want to display your stuff, they now at least know you're nearby and if you leave a card and nice color brochure they might forward people to you later.

display samples in target market areas (i.e. frame, photo engraved tile, etc. at photography studios) with nice brochures. In one case, a friend of mine did this and within a few months of him getting direct business, the manager of the photograhy studio actually worked up package deals with his clients that included personalized 8 x 10 frames when they purchased certain packages.

Shaddy, these are excellent ideas which we will incorporate into what we are already doing. Thank you.

Thank you Franklin. We are just starting to get up to speed with photo engraving, but I can see opportunites for placing these items in areas such as you are discribing.
