I don't know how many of you have seen this, but a friend just emailed me photos of watermelon that had been cut with a laser beam! :O  A few of egg shells too.

The watermelons were beautiful. I would think it was a laser engraving machine, as it was in a 3D type look. But, who knows!

Just thought it was interesting to see them, very talented stuff!

John,

Sure, here are two of them. She sent me about a half a dozen of the watermelon and then the same on the egg shells. Here are two of the watermelon. Enjoy!!! :-)

I read an article a few months ago that some of the fruit in grocery stores are going to be lasered with the price code. No more little annoying stickers.
I haven't seen any yet, but they say its coming.
Wonder what else they will be using lasers for.

Zona,

Here is one of the egg pictures, just for you! ;-)

I am not patient enough for the eggs, I would be walking on egg shells all the time!~ ;-)

At least the watermelon I could eat when I distroy it! :P

I think the eggs are done with those little dremmel like tools. Not the actual dremmels but the high speed 20,000 rpm ones that are like pens. Can't remember there name.

Chris,

You are correct. This type of carving is done with a handheld tool.

Check out The Egg Man. His portfolio has some pretty impressive stuff. I think you ought to buy a dozen grade A. ;-)

The "Filigree" styles have incredible detail.

I bet it is possible to do that stuff (or close to it) with a laser, but I also bet the clean up would make it not worth the trouble.

A friend asked me to engrave a chicken on an ostrich egg. I told him I would give it a try if he didn't care if it ended up destroyed. He did not care and I was able to do a nice job on it. The chicken looked pretty good but I wanted to experiment more so he told me to do something on the bottom because he was going to set in a basket and the bottom would be hidden. I vector cut a round hole in the bottom and the laser sliced right through the thick shell. I believe with a little time and effort the egg shell can be conquered.

Jer<

Was it hard boiled by the time you were done? I'm in the mood for a little egg salad. :D

You should see one. The shell is about 1/16" thick. They had drilled a hole in the bottom to get the egg salad out. I doubt if I had dropped it that it would have broke. The smell was a little funky.
