Full Version: Opening an Eps File

Aloha.

I am being contracted to design signage for someone who works on a Mac. I am PC based.

His files will be generated on a Mac in Adobe Illustrator v. 11 and sent me as Ai EPS file attachments. I work on a PC in CorelDRAW v10. We will need to exchange hundreds of these files over time on various sign system projects and so I'm looking for the simplest way to do this. I can save his emailed Ai v 10-11 EPS files to HD and then import them into CorelDRAW but that's a bit tedious considering the volume of drawings we will be exchanging.

My problem is that I CAN open his Ai v3 EPS files directly as I have my EPS file association set up to open in CorelDRAW but I can't open his v10-11 files directly into CorelDraw v10.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to open (not save/import) Ai v10 or v11 EPS files directly into a later version of CorelDRAW v12-x3 on a PC?

I could send you a test file around 500KB if you that would help.

Mike,

What we do when working with EPS files is to save them into a set folder on your PC.

Open up explorer

Open up Corel

Now drag the file from the folder and drop the file into the Corel page.

This works for us give it a try.

P.S. are you in Hawaii?

Make sure that they save them in the PC format!

Hi Mike.

Thanks for your advice.

I am able to do it as you mention; IE: save the email attachment to HD and then either import or drag into CorelDRAW. Works fine but requires additional steps, something that is significant as we will be sharing dozens if not hundreds of design drawings over the course of a project. This is not a one-time file exchange.

Right now if you have a file association made in XP to open eps files in CorelDRAW it works with older versions of Illustrator files.

I should mention that I'm trying to save him the additional step of converting his files to a lower version of Adobe Illustrator for me. He writes the checks. ;-) I'm the lacky.

What I'd like to be able to do is open these later version Ai files directly off an email (double click the attachment) and have them open into CorelDRAW. I can do this with Ai version 3 eps files converted for PC he sends, so far I can't do this with his Ai v 10-11eps files.

That's why I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to 'open' Ai v10-11eps files (not import/drag) directly into a later version of CorelDRAW. (v12, x3)

PS: I am in Hawaii. I live in Kaneohe, Oahu.

Mike,

I have heard that X3 has problems with later versions of EPS files
(11/12) on the other hand Corel 12 seems not to have these same issues. The best solution would probably be to get Illustrator.

I know that when anyone starts there post out with ALOHA they must be from HI. I just returned from the islands yesterday.

Its already been suggested to me by the client that I get Illustrator but until we get a little further along in our relationship I'm hesitant to spend $300-$600 for new SW.

I know Dave is not the type of moderator to nuke an off topic comment, so where were you in the islands? Hope you missed all the rain and poluted beaches on Oahu the past six weeks.

Does anyone here have CorelDRAW 12 or x3 loaded? Could I send you an eps file to attempt to open? I can give you simple instructions as how to set up XP's file association to open an eps into CorelDRAW. Two clicks in 'Control Panel' does it, easily reversed after the experiment.

Mike,

One thing about this forum you can have friendly conversation about anything. I was in Kailua and Kapolei Installing systems. I heard all about the sewage spills and the rains. However I was lucky the weather was great the whole time I was there.

I was also very surprised to see the gas prices there are pretty much the same as here in L.A. I even found gas for 3.02 per gallon almost .28 cents cheaper than here. I don't think I will ever understand the logic with the pricing.

If you have not figured out the answer to your question regarding the files I also have all versions of Corel and Illustrator loaded and would be happy to help if you need it.

Thanks Mike. I sent Mark at Precision Lasar a file to try. If he has a problem I'll let you know.

Re gas in Hawaii. In our State's infinite wisdom, Hawaii enacted the country's only mandated wholesale price cap last Sept. Our price is based on a weekly average of three points on the Mainland. Seems to work better for the consumer than before the cap as now when Mainland prices fall, they also fall here; something they didn't do before.

I'm not a big fan of government regulating free market pricing but that's the way things go here. Ironocally as prices are beginning to soar again, our state govmt now wants to repeal the cap.....its 'really' fun living here! >.<

Mike,

I'd upgrade to Corel 12 since X3 has problems with EPS files while I've never had a problem opening them in 12.

Are you the notorious Hula Mike in a previous life on the DSSI Board?

Dave,

Sshhhhh! Don't let anyone know that Mike is the one-and-only HulaMike O'Hara.

The guy's a notorious pot-stirrer, with a mind of his own and a strong opinion and he's not afraid to use it.

Maybe that's why he's been one of my closest forum compadres since 1999. :-)

Big talk Mick. B-)

Does the name, "Golden Buffs", refer to Colorado's football team or the players preference for attire around coeds?

Big Red is on the rise brudda! ......you can take that any number of ways. hehe.
