Full Version: Thinking about X3

I'm thinking about upgrading to X3, but for me the biggest reason would be for the improved tracing feature. I'm curious to see what kind of result one gets when given an image such as the one attached.

If it is still garbage-in, garbage-out, I'll probably wait a bit longer for the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

It's not the best trace program, but it is a vast improvement over earlier versions. Here is a fast trace of your image without any settings tweaking. (saved in ver 12)

I am a newbie to X3, having only had it a few weeks and never used the trace feature.

I loaded your image and went to Bitmaps > Trace Bitmap > Quick Trace. I didn't set any settings or do any changes. I just clicked that menu setting and saved the result. I'm sure one of the more detailed settings could have done a better job, but I think it came out pretty good as is.

I don't know what version you have now. I saved is as V11. If you need earlier than that, let me know.

Here it is:

(oops, sprinter beat me to it)

It is still garbage in-garbage out but that was anything but garbage.

Here it is in CMX form with the standard settings. No tweaking needed on that one.

EDIT: Wow, I converted it then took the time to find where the file went and already you had responses.

I must say that is much better than what I have been getting out of a graphic with this resolution. Well, you've convinced me. I'll have them send your commission check, but you'll have to split it with David Jones. ;-)

Dave,

Thanks for the quick response. That is a pretty impressive trace considering the quality of the image I provided.

Harvey,

You've got to be pretty quick at the draw around this place. Thank you for your effort.

Unless I am not seeing what I am seeing, the trace is actually smoother on the curves than the original jpg you provided.... :O

Steve,

I noticed that there was some tweeking that I would need to do to make a near perfect match, but I am still impressed with the result.

I converted it as a logo. It defaults to 25% accuracy. That can be bumped up if some corners become un-pointed. You can also control the accuracy by the rounding setting.

Depending on how large it is needed in the final product, you can go to almost extremes. If you look at the DXF image, on screen it looks identical to the original image. I consider the original a super image compared to what I get.

I thought your original was pretty good to begin with. Though I was pleased with the result for an auto tracing. I've used other software to trace really bad scans and those might not come out so well even with this program.

I've used Illustrator's new CS2 super-duper tracing thingie and it was also excellent, but previous versions were not so good. This is the first version of Corel that I've owned, so have no experience with how earlier versions traced.

I've had X3 for a month or so and i'm impressed with the improvement in the trace feature also with importing files. It's a lot less painless in that respect. i still use CD11 for my engraving just because I'm comfortable with it. I was the same way with version 8.

I think there are a couple of bugs in X3 as it has crashed a few times whereas 11 has been pretty stable.

Also the "knock-out" feature in Paint is improved and useful. I guess it's not the same as the real version of KnockOut but it works.

It may be easy from 11 to 13. It is a bit of a bummer from 9 to 13. The stuff is still there, just some in different places and with different terminology. I am still only using 13 sporadically till I get th full hang of it.

Harvey,

Throw 9 away!.................... If you don't use X3, you will never learn it and by the time you learn it and begin to like it, 15 will be out :S

just kiddin' ya - I keep seeing you are using X3 more and more..... good for you!

I would say X3 is not a must upgrade but if someone is on anything below 11 - they need to come up to speed and it might as well be X3. I have only been using it for maybe 2 months, and I have had fewer problems so far :D  Even the lady that works for me part time that didn't want to use X3 because she was afraid to try anything new told me today that she used X3 and she liked it. It is now loaded on all my machines except 1, the 1 machine is so old and slow and not worth upgrading will be replaced soon and she will have no choice but to use X3.

That is what I am trying to do. But you know business, "You need it WHEN?".

When I have the time to work in X3 I do. When it is a super rush I work in 9.

I need to get familiar enough with it to be able to tutor my employees that are only familiar with 9, so I better be darned good.
