I'm looking into adding Recongnition plaques into my business and need to know what inventory I would need to have on hand.
Also is there a book showing different layouts and sayings that I could get.

Thanks Cindy

As for inventory whatever you have the customer will want something else for at least the first 20 orders so you will build up an inventory if you buy a case of each type you sell. Of course you have to buy plates too so buy at least the minimum of those and try to limit the type you show the customer.

For a book of sayings:
Plaque-Talk

I don't remember how much but do know it is worth it.

Edited to fix the state

Another source for appropriate sayings are supplier's catalogues. They usually have good stuff that can be modified.

Hi Jim,
Please edit the address for Plaque-Talk to show it is in NY.

Have you ever done anything from the comic section? Some of them are really gross!

Hi Cindy,
Our customers love the book Jim mentioned. We have made a copy (we keep the original in the office) that we put in page protectors and keep on the counter. It isn't cheap but worth every penny and more. It gives our customers a sense of security that what they are saying sounds good when they see it in a book.

There isn't any family oriented "stuff" in there so I buy greeting cards and the customers browse through them for ideas.

I copy lots of displays from the Tropar catalog. Their layouts are good and if you are just getting started in plaques it will be a help to see how someone else does it.

I fixed the address. A case of the fingers moving faster than the brain.
I too use layouts from catalogs. I have never used a comic but I used to cut out the ones that made me laugh and put them in a scrapbook. Sad that so few made me actually laugh out loud.

Jim,
I was talking about the humor section in the back of Plaque Talk. Some of them are really ugly. They sound like something Steve and or Chuck might say when they are on a roll (devil) .

For more serious occasions or even sad ones (we happen to get quite a few urns to engrave at our shop, don't know why) the book of Proverbs and Psalms have excellent stuff.

I'd suggest the New King James version for more "poetic" version and the New Living Translation for more "easy to read" version.

If you need to find something quick, go here , you can do a keyword search or if you know a particular passage you can look it up directly. A dozen or so versions to pick from.

I've got a great response so far from the things I've done in this manner. The right passage for the right occasion from the bible can touch someone's heart like you can't even imagine.

When something meaningful is put on an item, it also seems to have an immediate and substantial added value to the one receiving it. (That's just my personal observation based on my limited experience though).

Thanks, that's a great idea.
Being a home based business doing mostly industrial engraving, how is the best way to grow my business into doing plaques also. Any good ideas?

Thanks Cindy

Well duh me. Can I take a mulligan on my earlier response? I skimmed through the entire book when I got it and haven't looked at the comic section since. I agree they are none too pretty. I like a good pun and these are not.

They are more likely to be found at a roast than humorous. If you want to insult someone, that is the section to use. The rest of the book is good.

They also give you the right to copy the book as many times as you want. That makes it lawful to make copies to use at the counter while the original stays in perfect shape. It is the broadest rights I have ever seen granted. Kudos to them.

P.S. Some of the letter counts are off.

Harvey - I did a search on the net for this book or it's publisher to find out a little more about it - came up blank. I saw the phone number but is there any other way to find out the price and a little more about what is included in it. Even Amazon did not have any info? Who wrote it?
Thank you

I called them up yesterday and ordered a book for myself. Speaking to them they said that they (Rockaway Graphics) commissioned a person (who?) to write the book because they got tired of trying to explain to people what would be on a plaque and to have some good layout and sayings. The book is 39.95 + 7.00 shipping, something over 100 pages. It is not available from any other source.

Thanks Bob for the update - I wonder how many they have sold over the years? Does not seem to me like it would be a high volume book.

Cindy,

Another resource for plaque sayings is the ARA website in the "Member" section. We've used some of them to show customers. There's not a huge selection, but it's been enough to get the wheels turning in the customer's mind.

HTH,

Cody
