Full Version: X3 interactive connection tool

I'm so frustrated! I'm trying to use the interactive connection tool to divide up a box. As long as I click on the midpoint of one side and go to the mid point of the other side, it works fine. Any other point on the box doesn't work. Also, once I draw the line, it won't let me drag it to any other location on the page at all...Any ideas?

Would the graph tool work on this job?

Mike,
What exactly are you trying to end up with. A bit more information would be helpful.

It's not that I can't do what I'm wanting to do another way. I can always draw several boxes and put them next to eachother to make a table, but I should also be able to draw one big box and then use the interactive connection tool (I think) to draw several lines inside of the big box to make several smaller boxes. In older versions you could click on where you want the left side of your line, then drag to where you want the right side of your line. If the line wasn't where you wanted it, you just grabbed it and moved it. For some reason when I try to drag it somewhere, it's like it is anchored to the points I initially built it. Mostly this happens when I connect it inside a box. If I just put a line some random place on the page, I can usually move it around. And when I try to use the tool to draw lines inside of a box, it will only let me draw them from midpoint to midpoint. In other words, I can't divide a box up into thirds if I want to.

sorry if this isn't clear...

Mike:

If I understand what you're trying to do--make a series of equal sized boxes within an outline-- then the graph tool will do it instantly.

Mike,
Like I said, I know how to do what I'm trying to do in another way...I'm just wondering why the interactive connection tool doesn't work the way I think it should.

I don't have x3, but it sounds like the "interactive connection tool" is "connecting" the ends of the line segments and not just "positioning" them. When you go to move the line it is connected/anchored to your outer box; it's not independent.

Mike,

I think others are trying to say that is not the right tool to do what you want (or maybe we still don't understand). Sounds to me like you want to use the Knife tool to "chop" apart an existing object into separate objects. I confirmed that X3 still works the way I think it is supposed to work (not true in all X3 functions).

I must say, however, that I've never figured out a use for the interactive connector tool, so maybe I'll learn something if you'll explain why you are using that tool(?).

Roy,
It's probably just like you said...I'm trying to use the wrong tool for the job. I've spend my life using what I've got handy instead of using the tool that was meant for the job. Needless to say, I've had a lot of long jobs that could have been done much faster...but that's life. I actually found that the free hand tool works much like what I was wanting. I just wanted to click one spot, then go to another spot and click again and have it draw a straight line between the two clicks...seemed like the interactive connection tool was doing that for me, but limited. Now I just found that the free hand tool works that way too, so I will just use that.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Mike
