From my perspective, this is a must read for anyone who fancies themself as a small business owner ($5,000,000 in gross revenues is still a "small" business).

Ed,

From a post in another thread, you shared the above statement about the the book "E-Myth Revisited". I ended up buying the book while in Omaha, NE, in hardback, because I felt it could be one of those resource books that would be referred back to over and over. I wanted it to withstand my abuse.

I really enjoyed what Michael Gerber, the author, had to share. He certainly has me pegged, but fortunately caught me at the stage of transition from Infancy to Expansion. It is nice to have his guidelines as the foundation to this process.

For my first 5+ years of business it has only been me, myself and I, so I've never really had to worry about getting all of my business practices into a written, formal manual. As I begin the process of adding employees it is imperative that I have the structure in place so that the staff adequately meets the needs of our customers. Michael has provided some good framework to do this.

I have envisioned in the long term having an additional location. With consistent management, marketing and technical systems in place, this will become a much easier task.

I had a nice visit with Beverlee Rasmussan, who is a Program Advisor for E-Myth Worldwide. While I will likely try to go it alone during my business development process, I won't hesitate to bring in the experience of Michael Gerber's team if I run into any stumbling blocks.

I really appreciate you sharing this resource. I hope I'm not the only individual who took you up on your advice. I'm glad I did. :-)

I thought that Gerber was one of the best speakers that ARA has had at a trade show. Around 10 years ago He gave the address at the members breakfast and that was immediately followed by a workshop with him. At the time, I only heard excellent comments about the workshop and everyone seemed to enjoy it and get a lot from it. But, shortly after that, I started hearing people who attended the workshop complain about Gerber's crass language. Some of the people I heard complain about this were the same people I had watched frantically taking notes during the talk and speaking glowingly about it immediately afterward. Those complaining were so vocal that it lead to ARA sending out an apology letter to everyone who attended the workshop. It was a shame that instead of discussing the good advice we all received, all I heard was outrage over some four letter words. You won't ever hear me using vulgar language, but I also wouldn't turn my nose up at good advice because I didn't like the way it was delivered.

If ARA had Gerber speaking again at a trade show, I would definitely attend. But, I am sure his prices are much higher now and wouldn't be affordable for ARA. The one day workshops offered by E-Myth Worldwide cost around $800 to attend.

Having been a Marine for 9 years, I doubt I would have noticed Michaels expletives. Unfortunately, being a master of the written word or having excellence in business consulting provides no guarantee that one will also be a good public speaker. Maybe he has improved in the latter category.

Not having heard Michael speak in person, I cannot attest to his use of "crass" language in his presentations. I can only attest to what I, and others have received from his books.

In any event, as relates to those who voiced complaints about his use of "four letter words", I would love to know how their businesses are going to the extent that they chose not to follow his advice.

I still highly recommend his book "The E-Myth Revisited". It's guaranteed not to have any crass or foul language. Just good advice for anyone trying to make their business better.

Jim,

They also have a forum-type community they started on the E-Myth website about four months ago. It doesn't have much activity yet, but in the future will likely see activity as time goes on. When I give the process more thought I may post a few questions related to our industry on that forum.

Ed,
The book e-myth revisited.....there are two apparently..... one is e-myth revisited. The other is e-myth revisited: why most small businesses don't work and what you can do about yours.... are they one in the same?
If not, which is the one we are all talking about?

Thanks

There are two books, but not two "Revisited". The first book, which I was NOT mentioning (only because I have not read it), is entitled "The E-Myth". It was written about 20+ years ago.

The sequel is entitled "The E-Myth Revisited". This is the one I have read, and am re-reading, as well as implementing.

Chuck,

There should only be one "revisited" version. Here is the cover.

There is also E-Myth Mastery, The Seven Essential Disciplines for Building a World Class Company, which is what I am now reading. It has a 2005 copyright.

Ed - thank you for your kind offer to purchase the "E-Myth Revisited" book for me and all other forum members. I am looking forward to getting my book ASAP - is there any chance you could overnight it ?? Since your being very generous, according to Chuck Burke, I figured the overnight ship charge would not be a problem. Also, I would prefer the hard copy version.

Thanks Ed - I take back a few of the things I have said about you.
Say hello to Sharon for us.

Ed,

I have collected my receipts and will be forwarding them to you for reimbursement. The receipt from Barns & Knowbel for $99 was handwritten because they ran out of ink. The fact that it looks like my handwriting is a coincidence. $99 was for the hardback. It was on special.

You kindness is unparalleled. ;-)

Oh well, at least my card made it to Hawaii, even if I didn't. B-)

To David T., Joe, Chuck et al:

Somehow, I'm thinking the book will be of no use to you guys; hardcover ("hardback" for those of you in or near Missouri) or not. B-)

Dear Ed,

Thank you for your kind offer. I would like the Hard back version with the holographic wrap around, the associated DVD collection and tickets to Michael Gerbers seminars including flights and accomodation at the LV Hilton.

Kathy and I also take back all the things we may...or may not have said about you...or even thought......or perhaps thought we thought...

Because at the end of the day ....we have always said ..you are a nice bloke.
