Full Version: X3 problems

I've tried several times to use X3 and at some point it seems to crash every time . I may get some jobs finished but out of the blue I get the Corel version of the blue screen of death.

Today was especially bad as I was trying to do some print merges. Couldn't get a one finished before it crashed.

Is anybody having similar problems or is there a fix out that I'm not aware of?

Thanks,

I've got it on 2 computers and never had a crash.

Like most newer programs, I'm sure it's a resource hog. So you probably need a decent amount of RAM and a lot of spare hard drive space. Both computers I am using have XP with all patches, multiple GB of free HD space. One has 1GB RAM and the other has 2GB. I don't know if any of this relates to your problem or not.

I do run all my stuff on one computer and I have a back up just in case but I have 768 mb of ram and 50 gb free on the hard drive. I may have to do a re-install. I like the features and was hoping print merge would be a little more usable than v11.

Thanks, glad to hear yours is ok.

I haven't been using the print merge, so if you are doing that each time it crashes them maybe the problem is just with that feature? I've been doing fairly simple stuff.

I'm not a whiz with print merge either and i find myself going back to Roy Brewer's tutorial often even though I write down the steps each time.

Name tags are the biggest segment of my business and print merge could be useful for part of that.

I agree, for routine things it's been pretty good but even on stuff where I have a mix of bitmaps and text I get a shutdown notice.

I don't have much experience with it as I have so many things going on right now that I haven't had the luxury of time to work with it. I fall back to v11 for just about everything.

When I get a little time I may just do a re-install.

I have not had X3 crash, but I use it infrequently due to comfort with 9. I use it mainly to train myself.

9 will crash for unknown reasons at times, usually when there is a long transfer time for virtual RAM. After a Corel 9 crash I usually have to do a system reboot, the RAM used is never released and leaves a dangerously low amount of operating RAM. I have had a system crash after notifications of low system RAM after two Corel 9 crashes in the same session, and that was while trying to shut down. I have 512 Meg of RAM.

I think it is a glitch that keeps saving information to RAM in a loop and never stops.

Harvey:

I suspect you're right. Like you I don't use X3 because I'm comfortable with v11 but there too the crashes happen. Not often.

I just bumped up the memory reserve for v11 and x3. I don't know if that'll help but we'll see.

I'm still a big Corel fan.

Mike, I don't use print merge but I have had a ton of other problems. In talking to Foster Coburn on his forum, Corel is aware of the problems I'm getting and is suppose to be coming out with a service pack "soon". Dave

I look in on a CD user forum and they seem to think a service pack is imminent. This one of those cases where misery loves company.

"Hot Patch 1" is out. But the problem listed seemed fairly minor.

Mike,

To my knowledge, there has been no work done on Print Merge since Corel 10; so if you were hoping some of the rough edges have been removed, don't count on it.

On the other hand, while I've had more than my share of problems with X3, I've never had a crash doing Print Merge. So, I don't think that is causing your problems.

I notice my propensity toward problems are directly proportional to the number of programs I have running. Especially if I have two or more versions of DRAW running.

[I know you and Dave Jones will be disappointed w/me, but I do *everything* on a 512RAM laptop.]

Roy:

There's a good chance that you're right about the number of programs I'm running. I typically have 3 or 4 going at once.

I suspect that you may have more of a "gift" for running a pc than I as well.

Thanks,

This speaker at week's seminar I attended on Corel Draw said crashes are mostly due to system resources being low. It might be possible you have adware running on your machine taking up these valuable resources. I've also been told too many installed fonts will cause problems...

Don't shoot the messenger (devil)

Thanks, I do have an adware program running although I try to manage my fonts by taking most of them out of the XP font folder and copying them to another folder.

But my email is always on as is my QuickBooks so maybe I'll just have to scale back a little.
