Hey Guys! It's me Jo with the blonde mane ;)
We finally ran out of sand in the sandcarver. Todd wanted me to ask what you all buy? We have been carving mostly hard surfaces ie. rock, marble, granite....what grit should he buy and where is the best place?

I use 180-grit silicon carbide that I purchase in 50 lb. buckets from UK Abrasives. My last order was for 200 lbs. at $1.06 per lb. plus shipping. Others will also try to save a buck by using aluminum oxide, but it makes a bigger mess than SC.

We do more glass and crystal than marble and granite, but with some patience, it works fine for us on all materials. If I had the room, I would buy a second blast cabinet with a more aggressive blasting media for stone, granite and marble. I'd probably use a 150 grit.
You may be able to find a local supplier. This would save you a bundle on shipping.

Todd took the liberty of already reading this so I guess I won't have to pass on the info.
I still haven't taken the plunge into learning how to use the sandcarver. I think I'm afraid of it. Not sure why. Maybe it's just one more thing to have to take on that I'm not ready for yet. Between the laser, rotary and those STUPID trophies I would like to get out of doing I just don't want one more thing to learn.
He does the work I handle the artwork and layout. Seems fair to me don't ya think?

I'm a little confused as to how you ran out of media. What kind of cabinet are you using? I use 150 grit silicon carbide for everything. Reason is as you use it it breaks down finer and finer until it gets carried away by the vacuum. I add in new media 10-15 pounds at a time when I need to which gives me a mixture of 150 to over 200 in my mix. This works great for everything.

There are a lot of fine products for sandblasting in this industry but there are a lot of fine folks being ripped off unknowingly. Abrasives are not that expensive....nor is blasting equipment. George,
I look forward to talking to you, but I really wish we could share our conversation here for all of the other members to learn in the process. I do realize that typing can be a challange for many, and that the traditional phone conversation is more personal and much easier.
I see that your company does quite a bit of sandcarving in wood. You have some intersting pieces. I also see that your company is a new member of the American Arab Chamber of Commerce. These are just a few things I hope to chat with you about. With 35 years under your belt, we may have to cut our conversation into multiple visits.
The leaders of this forum do have a way to organize a Tele-Seminar, where a group of people could have a question and answer session at one time. This techology may help you make better use of your time.
