Where can I find all of the processes and programs that start up when I turn on my computer? I should know this but I am not having any luck digging into my memory. I have too many virus detection programs running but most of them run in the background and I can not find them to stop them

Start>Run then type in MSCONFIG. Go to the Startup tab.

Thanks Carl. Hopefully stopping some of the junk will make everything go faster.

Try downloading Autoruns
http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndThreadsUtilities.html

Some of the things on that site are pretty advanced, but useful for those that are curious.

The ones in msconfig are usually ones that try to start on their own.

I hate real player and quicktime. Every time you use them they assume you want them to run in the background again when you reboot.

If you want things to open everytime you start like email, coreldraw, engraving programs, job server or even folders with text or job files, links to them can be added or removed from the (win xp)
C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
folder.

But the unwanted programs usually don't show up there. They have to be disabled each time with the msconfig.

Here is a good guide to what you should disable and what to keep in msconfig:
