Full Version: Need Help with Layering Issue

I am working with CorelDRAW X3 and have imported a supplied pdf graphic that was created on a Mac via Adobe Illustrator.

The graphic imports just fine into CorelDRAW, but the order of the layers is out of whack.

I can normally break a graphic apart and manually reorder the layers, but CorelDRAW is not allowing me to reorder. I have attached to this post a portion of the graphic to see if you experience the same problem. I'd like to see if you can move the red "G" on top of the black "G". Maybe I am missing something.

Have you tried a different version of CorelDraw? I'd try, but the file is an X3 and I'm way back at version 12.

I did try an CD12 but that inducated it was a corrupt file. I also had my customer send it over as an eps and am having the same issue.

Hi Dave
First thing is why are you importing your PDF? You can open them directly into X3 with the file open command. That might solve part of your problem. When you imported the file there are many layers but all of the data is on one layer. I highlighted everything and filled it with white and added a black outline to everything, sort of like wireframe mode. I was able to move anything I wanted to another layer with no problem. I know that doesn't solve your problem but I didn't have any problem.
I read your letter better, the problem is that only the layer called foreground has anything on it.

Bill,

I have imported and done the file-open option with the same result. I'm not sure why it is placing everything in the foreground. I moved everything to Layer1 but still had no success with it.

I tried it but get the same results as you. This is weird.

Dave
I'm using X3 and it worked fine immediately from opening without breaking it apart or anything.

It would not open or import in v.11

Have you installed the X3 service pack?

Right click on each layer except 'Foreground, then select 'Delete" for each of the layers.

If you wish you can now make a new layer.

The red comes out dark unless you right click on the 'G' and unselect 'Overprint Fill'.

Harvey,

The "Overprint Fill" was the culprit. That is what was giving me the impression that the "G" was not moving to the top layer.

I've got the logo ready to go now. Your commission check is in the mail.

Hi Dave
Sorry it took so long to get back but I had a bridal show yesterday. What exactly are you trying to do? I was able to move your pieces to different layers with no problem. The biggest problem is you said this file was from a MAC if I remember right, Well depending on the program that was used when they exported the file it probably said DO YOU WANT TO FLATTEN LAYERS when they exported the file. What this does is put everything on one layer. It also might keep all of the layer names but all graphics will be on one layer.

Bill,

The image was a small portion of the logo that was going to be engraved on name tags. The text that I included in the sample was a black outline, but the file came through with all the layers filled with black. I was simply trying to color the inside portion of the letters to white, then bring them to the front to create what I would assume is the correct outline effect.

I finaly got the logo where I wanted it without spending too much time on it. The order was completed and delivered this morning.

I really appreciate your help.
