Full Version: Corel draw - snap to intersection

I have a project I am working on and I can't seem to get the snap to intersection to work the way I think it should.

I have guidelines setup to indicate 6 points that I want a circle to be centered over. I select the circle and drag to the intersection and the cursor shows the "intersection" snap indicator but when I release the mouse button it doesn't put it exactly on the intersection.
I have checked help in Corel and it seems I am doing it right - but it isn't working.

All I want to do is place the circles very precisely without having to zoom in to the max and manually place the circle.

Any ideas about what I might have missed?

I'm using the X3 version.

Thanks for any help!

Gary

This may sound simplistic, but try zooming in a bit. I've found that it sometimes snaps to a point that's not what I wanted, but zooming in allows you to be further away from other possible snap points.

I understand simplistic much better than overly elaborate... :-)

Part of the problem is that it looks like it has snapped to the intersection until I zoom way in - then you can see how far off it is. There aren't any other possible snaps close to this so I am not sure why it isn't working.

I just tried a little experiment. I started with a new, blank drawing, drag a vertical and horizontal guideline to anywhere on the page. Next draw a circle, any size (mine was 2"). Went to "View" and "snap to guidelines" is checked. Click and drag the circle to the intersection until you see the "intersection" snap turn blue. Drop the circle. Zoom in as far as you can zoom and see what happens. With mine the circle is nowhere near the center.

The best thing about problems like this is that they will end up eliminating my need for shampoo - after I pull all of my hair out...

Thanks for any help!

After a bit more experimenting I discovered the solution.

I selected "snap to objects" as well as "snap to guidelines" and now it is working as I thought it should. I don't know why both have to be selected but as long as it works I guess I don't really care.

I'm still using version 12, so this may or may not apply:

Excuse the obvious: Do you have Snap to Guidelines checked and all others (Snap to Object, Snap to Grid, etc) unchecked under View? Have you made sure that your Snap To Object settings (modes) are set correctly (see Tools>Customize and Snap to Objects under the Workspace)? Or turn off all but intersection. You might try adjusting the "Snapping Threshold" in the customize to see if that gives you better results.

Do you have other objects near the guidelines? You may want to put those objects on a separate layer and turn that layer off. Are you trying to use Dynamic Guides on guidelines?

I have not used that in X3 yet, but in 9 it has the same problem. It almost looks like it snaps to the screen item, not the mathematical item. Zoom in a lot and it is off. The more you are zoomed out when placing it, the farther it is off.

After you do it in a close zoom, it stays there even when zoomed out.

Another way to put the objects at an exact point is to select the object and then on the left side of the Property Bar you can enter the exact x and y location of the object.

Have you checked your snapping sensitivity settings? If set too low it may not snap where you want it when zoomed out.

I will when I get back to PA. Thanks

I have looked through both Corel 9 ans X3 and cannot find anything even similar to snapping sensitivity settings except a high, medium and low setting in X3.

They seem to be for the closeness to the guide before they snap.

Please enlighten me.

You are right; the settings only set how close you have to be to the snap point. In Draw 12, I can't get anything to snap to guidlines, only objects. >.<

bobkat,

In version 12 & 13 you can set the "Snap To Guidelines" in at least 2 different ways.

1. go to Tools - Options - Guidelines - then check the box "Snap to guidelines"

or

2. right click on your Command Line - then place a check mark beside Property Bar. When you have nothing selected, you will see an icon that has a dotted line and a triangle, click on it - that will allow you to toggle snap to guidelines ON & OFF -

it will also bring up icons for Snap to grid, and Snap to objects among a few others..............
