I am unsure how to handle this with the new rules. BratDawg brought it up and I have no answer.

It is time for the membership to decide the question.

An occasional pun as part of a relevant answer in a thread is fine....

Turning a thread into a "pun fest" or competition of puns is beyond the folder's intent in my opinion....

Even in the 'Topic Of Your Choice' folder?

And remember to go back and vote so the poll is more accurate.

If the topic is political (heaven forbid!) I see no problem with a limited number of puns that enhance the responce but puns for the sake of puns? ONLY if the thread is designated a "pun Zone" itself.

I cannot vote since you gave NO option for limiting puns.. only yes or no..

Harvey,

Since the "Topic of your choice" folder is rarely a business-related topic, I voted for less moderation of that folder, with regard to frivolity.

The title of the Steve Wynn topic, was a play on words, which, in itself opened the door to punsters.

I don't think removing the human element of humor, especially in these times of high tension in the world, will work in our favor.

In the technical threads, I'm for letting things roll, with the use of changing the discussion title, if necessary, to reflect its content.

That's been successful in the past.

We don't want to lose the spontaineous and fun-loving nature of the forum.

I am a member of several types of forums; aviation, engraving, poker table building, etc. Every one of them moderates a bit differently for the forum in general but the one common theme is that they have an "off topic" folder that they will allow virtually anything. They won't allow profanity, racism, threats and anything like that, but they allow pretty much anything else. Hence the name - Off Topic.

If you want an off topic folder to allow oddball stuff but want to keep out the "really" oddball stuff then I would suggest creating another folder for the "Extremely Off Topic" posts and let anything go, within reason.

Most of the forums I frequent do not allow links to other forums, some ban links altogether except links in your signature to your own website. The reason for that is because they have paid advertisers and they don't want links posted for free when someone else paid to be there. If you want a link then you pay - pretty simple. I don't think it's too terrible to ban links, it just depends on the mission of your site.

Just my .02

Gary

Thank Harvey for allowing everyone the chance to voice their opinion....even Uncle Steve! (devil)

Actually, I don't necessarily disagree with him, and hope I didn't sound like I was condoning a "free for all" in an Off Topic area. Naturally there would need to be a little "forum decorum" displayed on everyone's part, and the obvious offenses as was mentioned, should not be allowed under any circumstances.

Nor do I think every thread should turn into a pun fest!....but sometimes, just sometimes, they're ripe for the pickin's! :-)  I agree though that after a few relevant groaners are tossed out, it's better to let the thread get back on course if need be without a major interruption. The major Pun fests should just be in their own folder where only those needing treatment should tread (ya know, going 7 days without a pun makes one "weak") :D

I think the main point was, if it's off topic to begin with, it becomes rather subjective as to what constitutes getting off topic in an off topic thread!...and I'm speaking only of an off topic area, not the technical areas of the forum. Besides, if you offer a place for folks to get it out their system when they need to, you may have much fewer instances elsewhere! :-)

Thanks for taking all of this in the spirit in which it was intended!

So far we have 27 views and only 11 votes. I guess that some people are as confused as I am.

I will let it go on for a while and be guided by what is in the lead at that time.

(P.S. I am glad that so far it is a hands off vote.)

Harvey,

Maybe the Topic of Choice folder could serve as a home for disruptive arguments. Rather than delete posts, those who want to argue to a point of uselessness can just take their game to that folder. Those who don't want to read that garbage can simply have that folder marked to ignore. Those who find it entertaining can read along and/or join in to their heart's delight.

In other words, maybe the Topic of Choice folder can be a free-for-all.

Just curious about how the counter works. If I come in and view the thread, and vote, and then a couple of hours later there are some new posts and I come in and view those. Then a few hours later I am back and there are again some new posts and I view those. Don't my 3 visits to the thread count as 3 views? If so, then 27 views could well have been done by the same 11 people that voted.

It is my belief that it means viewed by separate people. One thing we know is that when someone clicks on mark all threads as read, every thread gets marked as read.

Dave,

Everyone has their own personal description/opinion of a "usless" argument/discussion. Just because it's not the same as yours....doesn't make mine wrong.....

For wanting these "useless" discussions to end, you sure bring them up enough.......

You're a moderator...Isn't it time you back off the pot shots already?

I am not a moderator, nor the jacka** in the picture on the start page. :-)  I'm not about to turn this into a useless argument. There are bigger fish to fry. I'll practice what I preach.

I like the idea of taking a vote. I voted to allow puns and sidetracking cause I won't visit that folder anyway. ;-)

Even though this is a Topic of Choice, it doesn't mean the topic doesn't have value and the original poster may be very serious. Those replying should note the intent of the first post and act accordingly. If it looks to be a lighthearted subject then have at it. On the other hand, if it looks to be a post with merit then keep the puns to oneself.

We all know what can happen when the first jumps in with a pun. Did I see the floodgates open?

Look at sports for instance. If there is a fight in hockey, the first guy to join the melee is the one punished more severely. Why does the league enforce this? So it doesn't get out of hand...

Don't get me wrong, the punsters here are very....very good and I have my laughs like the next guy. But, I also feel for the original poster that had a concern turned into a joke thread.

I guess the answer might be to give an appropriate response the the poster.....and then.....just maybe throw one out if you can't hold it in any longer.

Harvey,
I voted YES! As one of the folks that precipitated the new "rules"....I am pleased at the ZERO tolerance for the constant bickering.....but like someone mentioned, one of the big reasons for coming here for me is the comraderie.....and in ANY discussion.....here or in real life or in person, or in a chat room.....things will ALWAYS digress, but they also have a way of getting back on track......if you take the humor away...it will be the same as allowing the bickering.....so there is no point.....( I think I may have just confused myself.)......

Just my two cents. Want change?
