Hi All,

Want to buy an vinyl cutter, does anyone know what is a good cutter.
I am thinking about Magic Touch cutter GraphTec, or Summa, or GCC

Also what kind of software is best to use, does the software make strait
angles possible or is that in the cutter?

Thanks,

Gilbert

Gilbert,

There were a variety of opinions in this thread:

I can also tell you horror stories about BMW's...

In other words...cant go wrong with those..

Peter :-)

Been very happy with a Graphtec FC 54" cutter that we bought a year or so ago...It's been a good new profit center for us. We use it as a print/laminate/cut system for industrial labels etc....

I really like the Graphtec Printers they are real workhorses. It will run for years. Can't speak about others.

BTW, as for BMWs, we have a 325i. Too expensive to maintain. The parts are completely overpriced. We will never make that mistake again.

Jim,

I have no personal experience with vinyl plotters, but I can attest to the output of the Graphtec print and cut system.

Rallye Productions made an industrial label for me, with that system. Turned out great.

I had promised to get a picture of the label, after it was installed, but shortly after the installation, the restaurant was sold.

Evidently, the labels have more longevity than restaurants. :-$

Oh, and I was told by a BMW mechanic, that BMW stands for "Bring Money With." :-)

I have two Roland plotter/cutters and really like them. The first Roland I bought is now over ten years old and still running strong, very little maintance on it in that time frame. I did purchase the second one earlier this year ( a used one) just for a backup since the first one is getting so old but rarely use the backup. So my two cents is for Roland cutters.

I've tried alot of different software but still use the software bridge that came with the Roland cutter and coreldraw.

Thanks for the info,

Last thing to ask is what kind of software is the best to use. I use gravostyle98 engraving software and know this very well so making
vector lines is no problem for me. Only want to know if settings for making strait corners is in cutting sofware or is it in the machine itself.

Does anyone know Magicut?

I don't know Magicut. I do know that New Hermes sold Graphtec plotters. You can use standard true type fonts and cut them in the Gravostyle 98 program. It works fine, but it requires a little practice.

All of the plotters should come with standard print drivers for Illustrator and Corel.

When I did some vinyl cutting I used FlexiSign. It has a lot more cutting features than Corel.

For Gravostyle98 you will have to find out if they have a driver specifically for that cutting machine.

The corners can be quite square with most plotters if they are set up right and have a sharp blade. Lettering 1/4" tall and smaller are a problem, not only in cutting but in weeding also. At that size there is very little stick to the backing and the plotter can pull the letters off as you cut them. Weeding is a nightmare due to that same reason.

Brian,

The Golden Goose is still alive. :-P

That was only one of their locations. Still more water in that well. :-)

They loved the label you made.

Thanks again,

When I make a square in corel draw or procut the cutter makes it perfectly square. It's mostly a what you see is what you get with a plotter/cutter, a circle comes out a circle, a square comes out a square with my cutters but can't say for other plotter/cutters. (my Roland is both a plotter and a cutter. You can use it to draw it out and see what it will look like before cutting if you want to.)

Hi Gilbert
I have a Mimaki CG61.
I am going to buy the new Roland SP-300 solvent
ink printer/cutter .
I don't know for sure when I am going to make the purchase, but
it will probably not be until January.
If you don't bind one and are interested in this one let me
know.
It is several years old, but it works great.
The cutter blade holder is wearing a bit, but I just order a new
one yesterday - ($190.00 for a blade holder from Mimaki, isn't
that terrible. But no other blade hold will work.)

Thanks,

But I am living in the Netherlands, bit far away !!
I will buy Graphtec this year.

Seems that Gravostyle 98 what I use has driver for it
