Full Version: Help Needed After Corel 9 Re-Install

I've posted the following on other sister forums:

Well it's a fine mess I've gotten myself in this time!

After many years of use, my Corel 9 started sending me various file "corrupt" messages. So today, I removed the program from Windows 98 and re-installed the program from CD.

Although this did the trick with the messages, I cannot activate the various drop-down menus in the areas of "Color Management" and "Profiles". Everything in these areas of "Tools/Options" is greyed out such that I cannot make any selections. Things like "Monitor", "Scanner" and "Printer" profiles drop-downs. All greyed out. Seems like something is turned off but, for the life of me, I don't know what.

This is happening even though my Artainium and other profiles are installed. It's just that this re-install of Corel 9 doesn't seem to know.

Can anyone offer any assistance?

Ed,

There is a new version of CorelDRAW out. It's X3. ;-) Are there some things that version 9 does that newer versions don't?

To Ed:

Uninstall it again. Turn off all programs including your anti virus program and re-install. Then re-boot your pc.

Mike: Thank you. I'll try that, although it will have to be tomorrow. The problem is on my office/shop computer.

As I was reflecting this afternoon on what the problem could be, I was drifting toward what you are suggesting if for no other reason than I have installed this program and CD on other computers that we use and have never encountered this problem.

I'll let you know.

Thanks, again.

Although I have Version 12, we use 9 for a lot of what we do. I'm not ready to upgrade as yet.

I wasn't ready to upgrade either until I tried the bitmap to vector feature. If there were ever a time to upgrade, X3 would be the version. I made the upgrade from 10 to 12, which was pretty anticlimactic, but X3 is like getting a new toy in the toybox. :-)

Since it is a new install after removal of the old corrupt version, it might still have some of the old settings left somewhere that is giving a problem. Hold the F8 key while booting Corel. That will force it to reset all settings to the defaults. That might do the trick.

I forgot to mention to be sure to install any Vers. 9 updates that may have been issued.

I agree with Dave. X3 has a lot to offer and though it took me a while to wean myself off of 11, I use X3 exclusively now.

Here's something you might try before you uninstall and re-install. If you have a corrupted file within Corel your chances of finding it are slim. The Corel people gave me a work around for this problem. It has to be repeated from time to time.

Close all programs.
Go to start, run and type in the following
%appdata% enter
select the Corel file
right click on corel 9 and delete it
restart the pc (a new file will replace the old)

For some reason the corrupted file is temporarily repaired and you can continue your work. It will eventually reappear.

Ed,

If none of these suggestions work, you might want to post your question here http://www.unleash.com/forums/default.asp

It is Foster Coburn's Corel forum

Good luck and here is wishing the two of you a very Merry Christmas!
