Full Version: Pocket watch

I have a customer bringing in a pocket watch for me to rotary engrave. What font do you use when engraving watches and such?
I told her we could not put the Gettysburg Address on a watch but I think that what she wants is close so it will be pretty small (she rattled off about 10 words).

Are you really rotary engraving, or diamond dragging? We generally use a 2-line slant script.

I never understand why people insist on engraving novels onto the back of jewellery. :/

It all depends on the watch and the room left to engrave. We carry a line of pocket watches and drag them all. Some have a blank side, some have a tiny initial panel that takes three letters of about .09" tall.

The fonts we use are Vanessa, Roman 3 line, Margaret (Double Block), Century 2 line, Helvetica Bold, & Script 2 line, in approximately that order of demand.

I will be diamond engraving. I had not even thought about a script. I will have to try that on my watch too.

Thanks,

Edit: I told her that there is not a lot of room so we can not do a lot. That is when she rattled off some thing like "Thank you Grandpa for these 37 wonderful years."

I told her we would do a quick layout to see how small it will be.

I looked in my Xenetech Fonts book and Vanessa is not listed. Is it much different than the script 2 line?
I need to figure out how to adjust the kerning on that font and how to save it so that I don't have to do it manually each time.
WIth as many words as she wants I think it will have to be a pretty plain font to be readable.

Thanks,

Vanessa is like a 2 line script except that the letters are independent. Also the lower case letters are larger than usual. That is the main benefit of the font, its legibility in very small characters.

I wonder if it available for the Xenetech. Jeanette?

If the Xenetech double-line script won't work, you might want to check the fonts available at lamro.com.

Hope that helps!

Jeanette,

I think that it will work. If the lower case are too small I can adjust that manually.
Is there an easy way to redo the font to fix the kerning. Especially the capital letters?

Thanks,

Yes, there's an easy way -- I'm sure of it. I just don't know how to do it! :/

I'm playing for a funeral at church so I'll be out of pocket (from 12:30pm-2:00pm Central) but if you're desperate for help on this ASAP, let me know. I'll hunt someone down for you.

If you can wait until tomorrow AM, daddy (aka Roy Brewer) will see this message tonight and will post instructions.

No rush. The watch has not come in.
Thanks again,

The .ini files in your c:\xfiles\fnt folder control the spacing between characters of Xenetech fonts.
You can also adjust the spacing between any letter combinations of any truetype font there.

There is a Xenetech font called Victoria that is a non connected script.
The original ini file for it is very bad.
I havent tweaked the ini file for it so just use a tt font instead. For small items just use the tt font outline and no need to hatchfill.

I have tweaked the Double line script ini file over time since I use it more.

To edit just [ctrl][shift][i] or misc-edit ini file in the XLG menu.

scroll down in the bottom left box and choose
Dlscript which is the ini file for the Double Line Script. Your spelling may vary if you have a different version of the font.

Copy and past the text below between the underlines in the top box instead of what is there. Make a copy of what is there now and save it in a regular text file in case you don't like mine so you can change it back. You can copy and paste to it like a simple text file.

You can also just replace the attached Dlscript.ini file in your c:\xfiles\fnt folder for the one there. You may want to just move yours to another folder in case you want to change it back. You can rename my file if yours has a slightly different name.

I have just tweaked it as needed so there still may be some changes needed.

John,

This is great! I knew it had to be fairly straight forward.

A harmonica would be SO much easier -- throw it in your purse & you can take it wherever you go! I should try it, but, alas, I am a pianist.

Dave,

Now, if she was a pianist for Barry M, I don't think she would remember a single note.................. just look up at him with those big "puppy dog eyes" :O)

Wow -- my OTHER dream job! Wonder how I would apply for it?

(Shhhh! Don't tell daddy I'd consider giving up my CURRENT dream job for the Mr. Manilow gig!)
