If you have a setup charge, then things tend to work out better.
A square inch charge works well, normally based on the laser time to do it. I have calculated that charge many times and just cannot remember what it is till I finish calculating, then the number looks very familiar. :-$

Again, you have to use your judgement in some cases. If you know that you are lasering something that you know will not have a long run time, then set your price accordingly. If you know it's a lot of stuff being lasered, then definately go by the sq. in. of art area. Getting a set-up charge will make up for any miscalculations you may have made.
