Full Version: Lasering Nylon????

I have found a few threads here which say NOT to laser nylon because HCN may be given off as a decomposition product.

Material Safety data Sheets for nylon do not seem to make it as a great hazard in fire and one specifically states that HCN is highly inflammable (and so would probably burn in the beam rather than be released in the machine exhaust).

Has anyone here actually had (or heard of) real problems from using nylon, or have people simply been put off by the MSDSs?

I'm going to press my customer to change to Delrin, which has similar mechanical properties and seems to be generally regarded as "safe", but I think that he has a fairly large stock of nylon to get through before a change could be made.

Thanks

Years ago I was using a molding company that decided to drop Delrin due to hazardous fumes generated during molding. They said that OSHA made it prohibitive to continue using it.

How that applies to you, I am not sure. Information is always helpful even if it does not directly apply.

Thanks Harvey

Great to hear that Delrin is bad as well!!!

Epilog make a feature of engraving notary seals from Delrin, which is why it seemed a safe bet.

Meanwhile, the nylon cuts fairly cleanly without any noticeable smells (unlike acrylics and HD-polythenes). Probably more bad stuff comes from laquered wood (which I do lots of) than nylon, so I'll stick at it until I keel over.

You could always send an email to Epilog and ask their opinion. If they know of a problem, I'm sure they'd say so.

Hi Guys,

We do a bit of Nylon. Cant sem to see any problems so far.

Our exhaust system is an old Rolls Royce 747 Jet engine, set on rverse. Do you think it sucks ?

Big time B-)
