Full Version: Looking for Purple Award

I have a customer who has selected all of their annual awards but one. They seem to be obsessed with finding a purple award in glass. Is anyone aware of a purple glass award?

I showed them some cobalt blue options, but that didn't cut the mustard.

Do a glass award and spray paint the back purple. Just like the glass plaques sold. You could try purple vinyl on the back if you have it.

Sometimes, if it is thick and free standing, just paint the bottom purple and the award will take on that hue.

If I choose to paint something purple, what would you recommend using to prevent the paint from scratching? I'm assuming that the paint adhesion would be pretty weak.

Another thought was UV bonding some purple stained glass to the back of an award, then etching and paint-filling the text and graphics on the front.

UV bonding over a large area usually gives some bubbles trapped.

If scratching will be a problem, maybe an overcoat with a laminate might be helpful. After the paint is completely, and I mean completely, dry you can put some white or black vinyl over it. The difference in color to what it is covering can add to the good impression of the piece.

Oracal 651 vinyl has the absolute least shrinkage of any vinyl. That can be important.

Dave,

What about Acrylic Idea Factory's AcryliPrint? Sounds like there may be a minimum order, though. You may only need 1.

Jim

Oops! I should have read your post slower. You need a "glass" award. :-(

David,

Maybe Greg Bencsik could help you out:

I just met with my customer and they have decided to switch to optical crystal on all of their awards. :-) They still want their purple award, but now on optical crystal.

I've decided to invest in the UV system for glass and crystal that has been talked about lately. It just seems like the best fit for this job. I'll be reinvesting dead equity that I had in my laser rotary accessory, turning that into something that will expand my capabilities in areas that fit my market a bit better.

I'll try to remember to take some pictures.

Thanks for all your ideas.

David,

When you get the ChromaCrystal unit, could you do me a favor and try it on a piece of acrylic? (angel)

American Acrylic has Awards with the ripple bottom painted purple
which gives the entire acrylic a purple hue

That is exactly what I want to know! When I talked to these NY folks at the Charlotte show, I asked them about using acrylic instead of glass and crystal. He hesitated and said you would not be able to trim the transparency after curing because you would scratch up the acrylic.

I'm guessing he wants people buying crystal pieces from them directly. If you could use acrylic, that would hurt their sales.

I was very impressed with this system and the colors looked incredible and with the light shining on them, it just looked very high-quality.

Dave, I'm already jealous but I'm excited for you. I expect some feedback as soon as you've played around with it. I want to buy the system as soon as my wife lets me!!! >.<

As we bring in more cash flow, I know she'll be willing. In the meantime, I'm going to have some samples made up and test the market. Maybe I can get enough pre-orders to buy the system!

Jim,

I'm a different David, than the one buying the ChromaCrystal system, but I share your anticipation, in seeing what David Takes comes up with.

Hey David,

Yes, I was actually addressing both of you in that one reply! I was glad to see you request an attempt at some acrylic. I've been wanting someone to do that. This would be a great way to get color in the acrylic awards.

I'm also still jealous of Dave Takes! :O

Jim,

Once your wife see tangible proof of the benefits of the system, you may be the next one in line to garner our envy. :-)

At the Charlotte show last October, they had a show price of $1995 which included a free inkjet printer, 50 sheets of the transfer paper, the liquid gel, and I think it was 36 pieces of assorted crystals, and of course the UV system.

The demonstration showed how easy it was to use. The current price is $2295 (without the printer).

One or two decent jobs and you've paid for the system!

I'll shop some samples around and see if I can get some business!

With the timing of this job, I ended up applying some purple Oracal 651 vinyl to the bottom of a couple of the optical crystal awards. I was successful applying the vinyl without getting small air bubbles.

After applying the vinyl, I applied some self-adhesive felt. The end result from the reflections of the crystal were very striking purple awards.

I had a chance to try it on acrylic today. The adhesive is not for acrylic. In one or two places it stuck permanently, the rest just peeled off easily. I then cleaned another piece with lighter fluid, same result.

Are you referencing the ChromaCrystal system?

David. I was going to offer a purple transfer for you to get this done but at least you satisfied your customer.

Al,

Thanks, but I don't think there would have been any easy way to press the transfer onto the bottom or back of this piece. I also wouldn't have wanted to mess with the post baking that is required with the OEM transfer process.

There was nothing square or symmetrical about the piece. I don't even think the Chroma-Crystal system would have worked on this particular shape.
