Full Version: River Rock Setting

Hello Everyone,
I had a lady come in and leave a rock for me to engrave, and I don't have any idea where to start with settings. Has anyone here done a rock before, and if so, what do you think a good setting would be for a 30W laser.
Should I use a mask before engraving so I can paint fill it?
Thanks to anyone who can help.
Barbara

I do a bunch of River Rock, mostly for one landscaper. I mask. Tried the Application Tape, not sticky enough or flexible enough to conform to irregularities. I use the Blue Painters Tape now. Rub it down real good. I engrave 2 passes at 10 Speed, 100 Power to get it nice and deep. Then I spray with Krylon. The Krylon holds up real good outdoors. I engraved some rocks two years ago with the logo for the company I work for full time, sprayed with Gold Krylon. They still look good (the ones someone have not swiped). Everybody wants one.
It is kind of a niche market but Landscapers love them to use as a business card.

Thank you Bob,
I will try that setting. I was going to use 6.5 for speed, but maybe 10 will be enough.
Thanks again

What size are the rocks?

Usually oblong or oval, anywhere from 6 to 8 inches in length. I usually get to choose and look for the flat ones so focus is easier.

HI Bob,
I did the Rock and it came out very nice. I used your setting of 100Power and 10 speed and went over it two time. I then spray with gold spray paint, but cleanup was a little difficult.
I went over it after taking off the tape, and some of the paint got a little dull.
It still looks good though. I just have a hard time cleaning it up.
Thanks again for helping me. Now I know how to do it. Just have to get better and cleaning it up after taking off the tape.
Barb
