Full Version: E-BAY Scams

It doesn't fit the standard scam profile for lasers (mostly Epilog) on eBay but this one was listed a few months ago (same description but different seller id) and I seem to remember that it sold - so - I would ask questions before bidding!

I just sent him a message asking for a picture of the serial number plate - I doubt I'll hear from him and if I do it will be some excuse why he can't send it... then again, I could be wrong.

Some other observations:

The seller has a feedback rating of zero.
The seller joined ebay the day before the auction. (starting an auction for a $1 book light that day)

The other one with the exact same description sold in November. It had a seller with a feedback rating of zero, who joined ebay the same day as the auction started, and is no longer registered with ebay. Once you sign up as a seller, you either have to specifically ask to become unregistered, or pull a scam.

The one in November was listed as being in San Jacinto, CA. This one is listed as being in San Jose, NM.

Yup! probably a scam. I got tired of reporting all those epilog off-lease scams to eBay - they don't seem to give a crap about stopping the scammers.

Well, remember that ebay does get a couple hundred thousand new listings every day. It would be hard to keep up with all the potential scams.

I thought that now when you listed big budgeted items that you were supposed to include the date and the business/your name on a sheet of paper in one of the pictures to prove that it wasn't a scam. So that people couldn't reuse your picture later to do scam auctions.

Maybe you could ask for a picture of that as well as the serial number.

I hate having a feedback of zero for this account, it worries me that people think I'm a scammer trying to sell larger machines with no previous sales, when the truth of the matter is just that my boss is ebay illiterate and never tried to list anything until I came around.

They're back.

Same description as last time. New seller, new location. This seller is also a zero feedback seller who joined 3 days before the auction started.

This time instead of San Jacinto, CA or San Jose, NM this one says they are in Mocksville, NC

It sure has plenty of dust and signs of use for such an IMMACULATE machine. :-)

Dave,

I asked the seller a couple of questions which included the serial number and date of manufature. These should match the records that Epilog has on this machine. I doubt he'll be able to come up with anything legit.

Did you ask if it was available for pick-up to save on the shipping?

That will also usually flush out a phony....

Better yet, ask if you can go inspect it before the auction ends.

People that actually have an item like that would probably not object. But scammers would.

Here is his prompt response.

hello,

yes,of course,but i`m in vacation right now.i will let you know in about 2 days,if that`s ok with you.ok?
i look forward to hearing from you.

He may be going from "in vacation" to "in jail" if I have anything to say about it. I will qualify that by saying that he is innocent until proven guilty. So far, he has done nothing but list an item on eBay just like the rest of us.

I just kicked the bid to 100K! What a scam. Here is what E-Bay said:

responsively address your concerns. As an eBay member myself, I can
relate to this type of situation. Your concerns are very important to

Frank,

I will be contacting the seller tomorrow to remind him that my sister will be coming by to take a look at the machine. I sent him another reminder today via e-mail. What do you think the chances are of her ever seeing the machine? I'm anxious to hear what his next excuse will be to string me along.
