Full Version: Inukshuk Gift

I had a customer come in on Friday with a jade glass inukshuk. They were going to present it as a gift to their boss on Saturday. They wanted to have it placed on a base with some engraving, but wanted the whole piece to be glass.

Their request was a real challenge because I don't stock any large jade glass bases that would handle the amount of text they wanted engraved.

Anyway, I wrestled around with some ideas and below is what I came up with. The customer was one of those last minute shoppers who also seemed to be a control freak. They wanted to pick out every font, word placement, etc. I won't take responsibility for the layout, but it looks okay.

Very nice piece...but wow, in on Friday and present on Saturday?

Hope she appreciated it.

WAY COOL David. Way cool!

Nice work, although I do not envy you with the control freak customer. Fortunately I only have one of those. Most say " You" are the expert. So it is then that I baffle them with BS. B-) Little do they know I only started yesterday ( insert laugh here)

Good job David.

Very very nice David. Is "The Blackpearl" the name of the piece?

Dee,

The finished piece was purchased by a group of three employees who were teamed up in a company-wide competition against 27 others. The theme of the competition was "ships in battle". Each team had to give their ship a name, which was "The Blackpearl" for this winning team.

Chuck,

The control freak and her associates were giving this gift in appreciation for the generosity of their boss. I'd like to mention that the boss is an even greater procrastinator/control freak combination.

I contacted the company 45 days ago letting them know I would like to continue creating their awards for their annual banquet. I've followed up and gotten the standard response of being too busy, but will get the info to me soon.

Well, after falling victim to her ways for another year, the 20 crystal awards will be arriving this morning (I hope!) for their presentation on Thursday evening. That doesn't seem bad, but sprinkle in jury duty beginning Tuesday morning that actually gives me a one-day window, unless I want to take time away from my family and work nights.

This will make out to be a very profitable day, so I really can't complain too much. :-)

David,
Congratulations on the job you received, and I loved the other one that you did. You are very creative.
I did want to tell you what happened to me last week.
I was also called for jury duty and went there and stayed in the room for a while. We were all called up for a case and they picked the jury out of all of us, and the remaining people were to go back downstairs. You guessed it by now I am sure. I was picked as a juror, and none of the questions he asked any of us got me out of it. I thought to myself, Oh well, it's probably just one day. The judge told us it would be a quick trial.
Well, I was there all morning on Monday, and then had to go back on Tuesday. Heard two more witnesses and then went into deliberations. I though it would be a rather easy morning, and had a woman watch my store for me, and told her I would probably be back by one o"clock. Well, we deliberated until 3:45 PM and I was honestly worried about having to go back the next morning. We finally all agreed on a settlement for a Civil Suit we heard and went home.

The moral of this long story is: Don't cut yourself too short on this job coming up. You could possibly get called out for something that could take a day or two. Just a caution, but that's what just happened tome, and I have never in my 18 years ever had to do that. :D :D

Barbara,

Thank you for the compliment.

As instructed, I called the court the morning of my jury duty and the case load was low so my number was never pulled. I didn't even have to go. That was a big relief to me.

Yeahhhhh! that happened to me a few times also, but not this time. I couldn't beleive it!
Oh well, Good for you. Now all you have to do is get this lady into the store quickly.
Good luck,
Barbara

David,

A few years ago, I was called for jury duty.

When the potential jurors were assembled in the courtroom, the judge asked if anyone had a reason they couldn't serve on a jury, that would require a couple weeks of their time.

I raised my hand and was asked to stand and elaborate.

I said, "I'm a one-man band operation and would be happy to be a juror for a few days to a week, but after a couple weeks, I'd have to fold up like a cheap lawn chair!"

That drew a laugh from most of the people in the room, except for the judge, who refused to be amused.

By the way, they excused me from serving as a juror. :B

In a previous jury duty I explained that I was a one-man operation with a retail storefront and that it would place a major financial burden on me to close down for an extended period of time. The judge explained that jury duty was our civic responsibility and that everyone sacrifices in one way or another to fulfill that duty. I argued (using that term loosely) a bit longer until I was finally put in my place. :@

The plaintiff in the case I was assigned to ended up being one of my larger clients. I mentioned that fact and soon become an unattractive option as a juror.

David,

I noticed that the once-popular excuses (to get out of serving) weren't working for the majority of people.

School teachers were told to call the school and inform them they'd need substitutes for the period of their duty.

If I hadn't been given a pass, I would have done my part.

Maybe the judge determined he didn't need a wise-ass on the panel. :-)

I'd actually like to serve on a jury. It would just have to be limited to a few days or a week, tops.

On the summons to jury duty Harv received it asked if you were self-employed.

So was mine... and they still wanted me to serve. I told them to postpone it for 6 months..... permitted for a first postponement.

We will see what happens in June....

To get this thread back on track, the recipient of the inukshuk gift liked it so much she requested that I make one for her assistant. :-)
