Is there a particular NAICS code that is associated with the laser engraving business? I do not really see one when i search the database using keywords.

Jeff,

I don't recall the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) ever being a topic here.

At least you knew what it stood for. That is why I hate the foreshortening of names.

Universal Laser Systems (ULS) uses "333512 Machine Tool (Metal Cutting Types) Manufacturing" and here's the definition:

Harvey,

I knew what NAICS stood for, as soon I googled those initials. :-$

A gaggle of us giggled when we googled.

We also spoofed when we goofed.

The same question was asked a few months ago on SawmillCreek. There was no obvious answer for laser engravers, but there were a few suggestions:

Interesting that we are both in the same state and presumably applying at almost the same time. Although we got as far as establishing a profile and obtaining a reference number, our application process was incomplete because they want at least one SIC # and one NAICS #. We appropriately (I think) registered as a non-manufacturer (retail store) and there was nothing we found that fit the bill. And anything we selected was rejected as not appropriate to our chosen "business type", which was "non-manufacturer".

I know that some would argue that we are, in fact, manufacturers. But if you look at what "manufacturers" are described as in their system, you would quickly conclude that we are NOT manufacturers by their definition. In any event, somewhere their description for "non-manufacturer" included our type of business (retail). We just could not come up with a code. Consequently, we cannot finish the application process.

So, for the moment we are stuck. This would have helped us with a bid that we are responding to by tomorrow.

I sent an email to the helpdesk and they ACTUALLY called me back the same day!!

I had to reset to manufacturer and answer yes to the 3 questions that are associated with the manufacturer status.

The lady gave me a SIC and NAISC codes that allowed me to complete the application

I think they were 3479 and 332812

Actually, after I posted to your thread earlier, I went back to the State certification website and got the Sacramento phone number and called them. After explaining my problem, I was directed to one of their techs. He walked me thru the codes, we picked something close and completed the application. It was amazing. I indicated that we needed to respond to a bid request by tomorrow. This afternoon, I received an email of "approval" and forwarded a copy along with my bid proposal.

Wow!!

Thank you for your timely thread. It prompted me to finish what I started yesterday. Had you not had a similar experience, I probably would have procratinated and sent in the bid proposal without the certification. By having the certification, as you know, we will have a 5% advantage over other bidders who are not certified.
