Full Version: Simulated Plaques

I have a customer who has presented laser-engraved simulated walnut plaques each year. I have never lasered the simulated plaques because of my fear of contrast issues, as well as the veneer layer pulling away from the wood if I chose to mask and paintfill.

Have any of you had success with laser engraving simulated walnut plaques, then paintfilling? If so, did you find that one particular brand of plaque worked better than another?

Dave,

I've used Continentals walnut veneer boards like that...no problem with the veneer peeling.

Keep in mind that I didn't do these to sell, but was just experimenting with some scrap material.

They held the gold paint (from Laserbits) well, and didn't show any problems during or after cleanup.

Cody

This project will require paintfilling with black. Did you use a mask, or did you simply brush in and clean up the acrylic paint from LaserBits?
If brushing in the paint, was there a problem with the pressed wood swelling from the moisture?

I didn't mask it, but just smeared the paint in by hand.

The Laserbits paint is pretty thick...I didn't notice it seeping into the particle board. I didn't keep the plaque after I made it, so I didn't get to see whether there was any swelling after the first hour or so.

David,

Walnut veneer would probably stand a better chance of success than vinyl-covered boards.

I tried color-filling (gold leaf enamel) vinyl-covered bords, both masked before laser engraving and unmasked. Lifted the vinyl off the board in areas of fine detail.

That could have been because of the type of paint used. <shrug>

I have had no problem filling with liquid shoe polish. I think JDS offers an oak color that is made for lasering and requires no filling, that is if you want the cut dark.

I have the option of not paintfilling, but have found that the pressed wood can sometimes have dark and light streaks that show up in the engraved area. This situation requires colorfill.

Masking really isn't an option with the thin areas in the particular logo I am working with. The veneer is sure to pull up when the mask is removed.

Dave,

Joe has lasered a veneer PDU plaque that looked great. The center is MDF & it has a real walnut veneer. We stained the engraving & you could not tell it was a simulated plaque, because the outer veneer is walnut. We don't laser the traditional simulated plaques that I can think of. It's PDU product Step 'N Roll-Veneer Finish, various sizes starting with a 6x8. So it's higher than simulated but cheaper than solid walnut.
And my PDU book is falling apart! When do they send out new ones?

David,

I will second Cody's suggestion of using Continental's Royal Walnut simulated boards. I do these all of the time.

I use vinyl application tape and laser thru then color fill with shoe polish or Folk Art paints. I have one customer that uses 5 colors on each board. I have never had a Continental plaque ruined by the masking or the paint. The other brands of simulated plaques will lift the finish off.

We have lasered the veneer plaque's with no color fill. Depends on what the customer likes. Contrast is not an issue.

PDU Books - I talked to the rep Friday at the show and he told me that they will be coming out later this summer because (drum roll please) they are lowering their prices and didn't have enough merchandise stocked up to fill orders, so they are going to wait to put out the catalog until they are stocked up.

I knew the PDU part. It was the "Books" part that I was not familiar with.

I believe they were talking about a new "Master" catalog to be sent out to replace the 2005 catalog.
