I received an AI file that Corel 9 could not open. I do not have X3 on this computer. Nothing else would open it, so I thought.
Adobe Acrobat Pro opened the file perfectly. I then saved it as an EPS file and imported it into Corel 9 using the 'PS, EPS...' filter. Perfect import of the vector image.
A good alternative way of getting the file into Corel.

That came in handy just now since it also works with Adobe Reader 7 with the pdf filter.
I received an ai file from a customer that even x3 wouldn't import which happens often. I have adobe illustrator ver 9 and it wouldn't open either since it must be a newer file.
I don't have Acrobat Pro and don't need it enough to spend $400 on it.
I just took a wild stab at it. I selected the ai file, right clicked and selected "open" in the free version "Adobe Reader" 7.09.
( You can also open from Reader by changing file types to all and selecting the ai file or just dragging the ai file to the Reader window.)
It opened and I used the choice to "save copy as" and selected pdf. (There is no eps filter saving in the free version.)
That pdf imported into x3 with the wireframe line art intact! :D
This file logo wasn't that complicated but hoping it works on others I get later.
------------------------------------------ The plot thickens
I have been meaning to check for new corel patches to see if they fixed the problem importing ai files. There are now 3 patches there.
Before installing the 2nd and 3rd patches the program locked up
when trying to import this ai file.(more than once on 2 computers)
After installing all patches it still doesn't import but now gives a mesage
that the ai "file is invalid" and doesn't crash.
For the sake of a complete test I tried to import the pdf I made from the ai file after the patches were installed. At first I got the same error message that the file is invalid even though it imported perfectly before the patches.
I was about ready to do a system restore to remove the patches since being able to open ai files is more important that any minor things they fixed that I haven't been bothered by.
I decided to try a complete restart first and it worked.
--------------------Summary
Now the ai file will get the invalid message instead of crashing coreldraw when importing with the ai filter.
I can open the ai file in the free Adobe Reader 7.09 and save copy as a pdf.
I can import the pdf file into corel x3 with the wireframe line art retained.

You would think so. Though support for file formats usually takes some time and often is locked down early in the development of a program. CS2 came out about 7 months before X3, but possibly by then Corel had already locked down their import filters.
On the other hand, since there are problems, you'd think they'd improve the importing with one of their updates. Come to think of it, I haven't tried importing any native Illustrator CS2 files into X3 since the latest update to X3 a few weeks ago, so it's always possible that they did fix it. I guess I should test that.
