Full Version: Bright ideas needed

Customer dropped off a bronzed ice skate and wants to have it made into a perpetual trophy - on a large walnut base with engraving, etc. She claims not to care how we mount it to the base, but we all know that if I use something that doesn't look elegant, she is going to be unhappy with it as will I.

I'm hoping someone here has done this before or might have an idea of an elegant way to do it. It's a kid's ice skate and the widest part is the blade which is around 11". Ideally there would be some decorative clamps that would mount to the base and have slots that a portion of the blade could go in. If there was a way of setting a set screw to tighten the blade, that would be best. I am envisioning a bracket such as that might be used by someone wanting to mount a sheet of glass vertically above a counter or room divider.

I don't know how elegant this would look (not being very familiar with ice skates)....

Can you bolt the side of the skate to the board? I'm thinking of two bolts - one near the front, and one near the heel. There might need to be another one above the ankle.

Never seen this done....please post pics when you get it mounted!

Colin,

I would create a slot in a piece of (clear or black) Plexiglass and attach it to the trophy base.

The blade of the skate would then drop into the slot. I don't think it would necessarily need to be glued into place.

Maybe even a white piece of acrylic, simulating the ice.

Or maybe one of Huang Acrylic or other's clear acrylic 1" thick "ice" plaques laid on it's side with a slot cut into it...... :D
