Mike,

The Linux proponents on John Fish's site, "Newbies Linux" are rubbing their hands together.

They think Microsoft has "jumped the shark" this time, with the introduction of Vista, considering its resource-hungry nature and not-ready-for-primetime status.

Has anybody heard of how far back in models Epilog will release Vista drivers for?

I have a feeling there will be some more orphans created.

We are still using a Radius as a second laser with XP. Just wondering if we need to ever replace the computer if it will work with Vista down the road.

Supposedly Vista will have the "run as" feature where you can designate a program to run as xp pro and older O/S's...

Don't know if or how well it will work, though.

Gee, didn't Windows 2000 have that 'feature' to pacify all the gamers that couldn't run their games on the newer OSs? If memory serves me correctly, my kids were sorely disappointed over the limitations of the Win2K implementation.

Yup.... So does XP. That is why my "if or how well" comment. >.<

I have a program that uses a serial port and works great in Win95/98 but freezes when trying to access the serial port in 2K or XP, no matter how you set the "compatability mode". So I'm not sure I would trust Microsoft's concept of compatability with Vista.

The SummaSketch tablet uses a serial port and even with their software to add to XP it will not work.

Windows ME changed the directory/file name DOS system by adding a '\' after what it returns, blowing all of the older DOS programs out of the water with that change. Setting it for 98 or 95 compatibility does nothing.

Then XP came along and when a DOS call asks for the drive in use it gives the drive and directory. Then when asked for only the directory it gives drive and directory again. Nothing using those calls can work. Again setting for 98 or 95 compatibility does nothing.

My personal opinion is that it is an intended problem to force the program suppliers to buy the latest version of the languages which cost a fortune for the full package.
