You have no idea how much I appreciate this information. Northbrook is not terribly far from here and I had actually considered cutting the stone to size myself, well actually suckering my husband into it was my actual plan. The project is for an indoor wall dedicated to those who have lost their fight against cancer. We were contacted by the society running this benefit to do an 11X13 tile that had an inspirational message on it etc. They were planning on centering the piece that I did and then putting ceramic tiles, sandblasted I would guess and paint filled (terra cotta color and offwhite pieces). Anyway, we mentioned doing the pieces in marble and the ability to add a photo if they wanted, I think the wall would look much classier, but then realized that this was not a size we could just order.
I really appreciate the help, I will let you know how it goes.

Glad I could help--I have a very good fabricator in Rosemont if you need this cut as well. Project sounds very interesting. Be very careful on the install side of this. If you are involved with this let me know. If you provide photo quality imaging on black stone, the entire mural must be dead on flat (perfectly plumb each piece), if not you will not be able to see the entire work from one angle. Good luck, I really would be interested in how this works out for you .

I just had another thought for your project. Go to photomosaic.com. This is not that hard to do and an 11 x 13 could be incredible.

Thanks again Mike. I will check out that site. I am not at all involved in the install. I took a liking to the person running this organization. His mother died of breast cancer 4 years ago and he started a foundation in her memory. We were asked about the 11X13 and after getting to know him and his project better, thought we might be able to help a little more. I find great inspiration in seeing someone turn something so tragic into something so positive.
I am going to contact the NorthLake company and see what I can find out about their stone. I will probably need to chat with you further if we decide to cut this stuff ourselves, of maybe I will contact your fabricator. I spoke with a stone mason a few weeks ago that I met purely by chance, he was supposed to contact me.. Says he works for a big architectural firm in Chicago and they often throw away huge pieces of absolute black granite, up to 4" thick. He says he will cut and polish it, so I was really interested in what he had to say. He took my card but didn't have one of his own, and of course I have not heard back from him. Hopefully that will work out too.
