Full Version: Elec. panel tag pricing?

Hi All- I have an opportunity to get started in a new area for me. Tags and legend plates for electrical enclosures and distribution devices. I really want to be successful in this first opportunity. But I need help in pricing and also who you guys might use as vendors. Do you buy your legend plates already cut out or make your own? I certainly don't want to be overpriced but I must make a profit too. I run a one-man show out of my home so I don't have the overhead that others may have. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Jim H.

You can always call your local electrical distributor and ask them how much they charge. I would look for the Allen Bradley distributor among your local electrical distributors. Usually these type of places charge up to $7 per plate (switch legend plates). Which is a little high if you ask me, but they don't need the engraving business so they charge a lot. But they also stock some standard worded plates for less. Like "Start", "Stop" etc. But they might not even do anything but switch legend plates.

Some companies order from them because they already have accounts set up and it is just less hassle with the paper work and how to pay for them.

Those same distributors will sell the blanks from the major electrical manufacturers. Some people will spec these types of plates. They tend to be expensive and may have a minimum order. For generic plates try Johnson plastics or cut them yourself.

BTW-

I don't see what type of equipment your using in your profile. That would help with answers!

Do you have rotary equipment, manual or computerized, and what size table?

Jim,

I do a lot of legend plates and tags for electrical panels. I charge $3.00 for 22.5mm legends and $3.50 for 30mm. The Jumbo's go for $4.50. Tags run anywhere from $1.50 up to $10.00 for a 4 x 8.

I use Romark from Johnson Plastics with the adhesive already applied. I start with a 24" 24" sheet and engrave first. Then cut the inner circle and then cut the outside. I space my tags .25mm apart. You can do them against each other, but I find that the finish on the adjacent tag suffers some.

I cover the Romark with transfer tape. Now the hard part. Weeding the tape off.

By the way, most on the forums say to remove the protective plastic before putting on the tape. I have never remove it and have never had any kind of problem related to it.

Peel the tape and let them sit over night and the "sticky" is gone. If you're pushed you can remove the sticky with most any cleaner.

Good luck.

I have been told that the easy way to weed tiny spots like letter centers is to apply a high stick tape, like duct tape, then peel it off with all of the pieces stuck to it.

Jim,
Legend plates and full panel layouts is 95% of our work.
Prices are $3.00 for standard plastic legends (any color) that we cut in house either with laser or rotary if beveled edge is requested.
Aluminum we buy ready made but not from electrical distributors,
they are to costly. I am sure you can get them from RONP.
Aluminum legends we charge $3.50 standard, jumbo once 4.50
I have found supplier for 22.5 MM legends black laser aluminum for $0.55each on 100 piece quantity.

Thanks for all the great info gang. Especially thanks to Steve, Bob and Tony. This is exactly what I was hoping for. BTW- Steve thanks for the heads up on my profile. Something must have happened because I did have it filled out originally. I will re do it. But for equipment, primarily my main equipment is a Xenetech XLT 1325 45 watt laser. No rotary right now. Again thanks guys. -Jim H. Amazing Engraving
