Full Version: What's happening to my Epilog Legend 24 laser?

Hi to everyone
I have an Epilog Legend 24 about 4 years old. Up until recently I have had no trouble with it. But all of a sudden I am getting a section of engraving just about 5 seconds where I hear this noise and the machine lays down about 5mm of lines in a solid block about 10 mm wider than the engraved job. This is very random no consistency in pattern. I know its in the machine. Not drivers. This can happen after I do 10 engravings or three or any period. Its very annoying when you have a costly acrylic or Crystal that is destroyed and you need to order another and hope it doesnt happen again. Has anyone had this problem or can you suggest something Baz

Baz,

Sounds like the problem could be communications or mechanical. To determine whether it's caused by the machine or PC, let the job finish running if possible, from there, remove the engraved piece, place a scrap piece of material into the machine and run the job again from the display of the laser. Does the exact thing repeat itself? If so, it's communications related.

Another suggestion is to make sure the job is fully spooled from the PC, view the job in the display. If the job looks garbled then don't bother running it as the data came over corrupted.

Contact technical support to further trouble-shoot. It possible, take a picture or a scan of the problem to help the techs determine what needs to be done. They can be reached at 303.215.9171 or emailed at tech at epiloglaser dot com.

Before panicking, check that you have some space on your hard drive and that there is some spare RAM.

Had a similar problem to yours - a 24x12" sheet of Laserlights filled with separate labels would engrave and kiss-cut in one go 18 months ago.
Last year using the same artwork, the laser would judder, hit the end stops and mess up the sheet with random lines. The solution was to split the sheet up into sections and run each section individually.
Recently, it started playing up with only one or two labels selected.

It turns out that the problem was the very old computer I was using - not enough RAM and a very nearly full hard drive.
The very old computer is now retired, I have a new "office" machine (super-wizzy) and the previous office machine (fairly powerful and lots of RAM) now drive the laser. Problem now gone (hopefully for good).

Baz,
I have had that problem on occasion. I can't tell you what causes it but I discovered that right before it happens I can hear the air assist stay on. If I hit the reset button (Epilog 24TT) before I engrave the next piece it will engrave fine. Just something to listen for.

Pls be sure that the air hose spreading on a metal tube, touch the x encoder reader and disturb the movt.

PUT OFF THE MACHINE.

Remove the top cap of the horizontal beam and see the head assy is mvg as usual when you move in your free hand. See the possiblity of touching x encoder reader module had friction on metal tube.

You could notice the scratch mark on the x axis encoder reader module.

if its., see the metal tube screws are correctly clamped on either sides.

proceed. else call tech guru.. techsupport at epilog.
