I think it depends on the tanning process used on that particular piece of leather. I engraved some bags last week that had virtually no smell but the test piece I used to see how the logo would look really stunk bad - like burnt hair.

Thanks for the answer Brian, the smell is not in the exhaust, it is in the piece after the engraving.

Or, get a really good cold. Major nazal congestion helps with the smell, sometimes.
