Rob,

Sunny and clear skies here in SoCal, but we won't get out of the mid 60s today.

Not a reference to music choices. :-)

Forecast is for wet snow flurries tonight here near NYC.

No one in this area believes that there is anything to global warming. We have been running 10* to 20* below normal for most of the past month and a half.

On the other hand it was unusually warm in NYC around Christmas. Up here in upstate NY we had the longest warmest fall and early winter I can remember. Winter didn't really show up until February.

But "global warming" is a misunderstood term. The actual warming is only by a couple of degrees globally. But that causes huge fluctuations (hot and cold) all over the world, as well as more and stronger storms everywhere. The actual warming globally is so small nobody would really notice, but it causes weather patterns to shift and that is what everybody notices.

I think the figure most agreed on at the moment is 0.2*.

It is a spit in the ocean compared to what happened in the 1400's. (I think it was the 1400's.)

I believe I read where the artic ice melt has been so bad over the last quarter century that they will soon be able to open shipping lanes from northern Asia to Europe negating the necessity of going through the PC or around Africa.

You mean that we might finally discover the 'Northwest Passage'?

I am not making light of the change in climate, as minor as it is, but it is minuscule compared to the changes that have occurred over the past centuries since recorder time. The Nile valley was the plushest area there was, now it is dessert. Other areas that were unlivable are now fertile areas. The Vikings had a thriving colony on Greenland till the minor ice age that is finally ending. (Ever wonder why it is called Greenland?)

If you go back to prehistory you will also find out that this is the most stable our climate has ever been. Nothing like the 45* changes in a 10 year period.

This fact alone may be why civilization had a chance to grow.

Harvey:

I'm poorly qualified to debate the issue but it does appear to be undeniable. I'm not sure that it won't bring good things as well as bad. I'm more concerned about losing species of animals and aquatic life.

By the way, I've never found a pre-historic author I'm fond of--can you recommend one?

Speaking of hijacking a thread 8-O

A lot of needless time spent reading about other than supplies for sale, that's why we should all stay ON TOPIC, supplies in supplies thread, puns in puns thread etc., etc...

I agree though sometimes it's hard to stay focused. But if you look back you'll see that the guy who hijacked the thread was the originator.

I have been very properly chastised. I am going to rename the thread and put the relevant posts in a new thread with the old title.

I am truly sorry.

Harvey:

I was referring to Boz. He was the one who started the weather issue.

Let's all jump on him.

And I continued with it. I am just as guilty.

But I think the problem is fixed.

(Brrr, just got cold around here. Had to keep on topic.)

So, you thought you could get away from my ramblings by just making a new thread!!! I'll hijack this one tooooo.

Oh the weather outside is delightful,..... (How about that for a segue)
