Hello All,

I know that many of you are going to get a full dose of eduaction at the Las Vegas ARA show in a few weeks, but how many of you would be interested in a mid-year educational/social event organized by the Engraving Etc. gang?

What topics interest you most at this point in your business development?

I would be interested in more events as it looks like I probably won't make it out west this year. :(

David,

I like the idea. My thought, would be to offer what isn't generally covered at other events. There seems to be geat interest in laser machine maintenance, for one.

In the way of sublimation, Color Management is probably the biggest hurdle for many people. That could be covered.

Depending on how grandiose the plans become, mid-year may be too soon.

If the educational sessions are promoted as the "primary" offering (beer and brats are NOT considered educational! LOL), the gathering should be tax deductable for all attendees...

Just a side benefit...

Steve,

Of course, we'd be showing up STRICTLY for the education :-)

This would be a chance for people to chime in as to what they'd like to see covered at such an event. I could see it turning into a two-dayer.

David,

I know as discussion progresses in this thread, we will get requests everywhere from Basics 101 to the Advanced classes. We would have to determine the best way to handle this.

You cannot have a one-size-fits-all class. That would be a big waste of time for everyone attending.

Let's keep the dialoque going and see what the concensus is.

David,

I agree. Instead of cursory overviews, I'd like the classes to be more focused and "meaty."

Must be getting hungry for the mid-west BBQ :-)

David T,

Sounds like a great idea,. We should have it your neck of the woods since you are in the heartland plus I wouldn't mind going back to Branson for a few days.

David L, You know I'd vote for the laser maintainance. Another location could be AZ in the fall since some of the US mfg. are located there and the So CA dealers of the offshore brands can represent their brands.

Excellent point on the manufacturers representing their wares. The mid-west doesn't have a real tradeshow that I am aware of and this could be a great opportunity for them to participate at a reasonable cost.... should be a bit less than the LV show...... LOL

Epilog and Universal reps are in the Kansas City area. New Hermes rep is out of Omaha. I am not sure if Roy Brewer's Xenetech territory runs as far north as the Kansas City area. It would not be a bad drive for Photobrasive to come down from Duluth either.

While we are in this discussion and brain-storming phase, we have no idea what our numbers would be, and whether it would warrant full participation from the major manufacturers. That would certainly be a nice long-term objective, but I think we would need to earn our wings before we fly.

David T,

The problem with rep's teaching us vs. the factory/HQ people is "Do they know how to maintain a laser" We don't need them to be on the phone back to HQ all day having someone walk them through it. I've met some woofully poor reps in the 6+ we've been the awards business,

Dave,

That is a very valid point in some cases. We would need to be very selective in the process of choosing instructors.

While definitly not a "given", one would think the mfg's would do the vetting of reps so they can put their best foot forward.

Agreed that it may not be big enough THIS time around... but every show starts small and grows if it is important to the industry.

I don't see this proposed event as an effort to compete with established trade shows. At this point, I simply see it as an opportunity for the forum members to match names to faces and share some of their accumulated knowledge.

I'm all for starting small, and although I would welcome industry supplier participation, I'd strongly object to a "Brought to you by Nabisco" event.

The beauty of this forum, and its primary function, is the sharing of brand-independent information. In my mind, the goal is to develop a "live" extension of that ideaology.

No argument here but it would be nice to have some of YOUR costs offset by those that profit from purchases by the forum members.

Days and location should be selected to minimize airfare and hotel prices.

Perceived value would be a good topic. This should draw on many examples and comparisons.

For people with lasers, photos are always a big issue / learning curve. It appears to be an art form. Image processing and laser settings all interact. There are already how to classes out there that show how to use a given feature on a given program. What's needed is the when and why. Can the trade-offs of the art be taught?

Greetings,

Organizing work flow would be a great topic. I'm interested in the get together.

Sounds like a good idea. (I have a laser engraver)

Would there be a way to get the pro's and the newbies both there? Like, maybe a general meeting/get together, but then break off into 2 or 3 different groups and cover different things (from simple to advanced). That way you'd have appeal to both ends of the spectrum. I'm a newbie, and would probably slow everything down if I went to an advanced meeting with a million of my questions that everyone else there might already know. My time would be better spent with a workshop covering more of the basics. (prep work of piece to cleanup, laser vector cutting grid improvments? work ideas.)

But I think a lot of tips and advice would come from interacting with everyone during the course of a get-together, so it would be great if there were a full spectrum of people there.

And I'm always interested in hearing what everyone does for their business, there's a ton of different setups here. (like mixing rotary/laser/dye sub...)

my 3 cents (inflation)

Hi David,

Kathy and I would be interested in a get together
depending on the timing.

It's about a 13 hour drive best I can figure, which
isn't to bad.

We are also looking at the Show in Columbus, Ohio
and always go to the ASI Show in Chicago.

Keep us posted and maybe give some idea
of the dates you have in mind.

Ed

LL,

I think we should hold it in your town in April. You can get us tickets for the Masters, Right 8<)
