Kate,
What airbrushes do you have? What are the features? Do I want double or single action? Which brand is the Cadillac?

Thanks

I have:
badger
paasche
iwata

My opinon?
I love my paasche an iwata.
My suggestion?
the iwata eclipse. That's "my cadillac" or so I call it that. I only use it for the "really good stuff".

their website: www.iwata-medea.com

But like I said that's my opinion. A single action paasche would suit your needs. Personally I don't like badgers. I just never have and rarely touch mine.

As for features? I think you'll find what you need in the iwata "eclipse". (make sure it's the high performance series) You'll be using more "liquid" than the little cup on the top holds.
Glad to help with any other questions you may have.

Thank you. Does the iwata eclipse handle "thicker" products? I'm primarily going to be using it for Cermarc.
I know I could brush the Cermarc on but I hear you get a better coat when spraying.....

Thank

That I'm not sure of. As I said I dont' use my airbrushes for Cermarc. I would suggest trial and error. Since with an airbrush you aren't really going to wreck it. Try what you can and dilute it with whatever cermarc suggests, water i'm assuming and do extra coats. But typically my airbrushes do a thicker paint substance, like automotive paints.

Rodney

you said in your post.

" Most problematic for us is the fact that the
coating often doesnt adhere well and air assist actually blows it off
- thus we dont use it when "cerdecing""

In talking with the Cerdec (aka CerMark) folks there is a product on
the market that is formulated to correct this issue. I have had the
same problem on high polish Stainless Steel boat parts. Dave Smith
of CerMark suggested the use of product LMC 6038. It contains
Ox Gaul (sp) which causes it to stick bettere to slick surfaces.

I don't know anything about airbrushing, but after reading this thread I saw the following auction on the local online auction in my area and thought I'd post for all to see. The seller won't ship, but if any of you want to bid I'd be willing to pick it up and ship it for you if you are the winning bidder and would just pay me for the postage.

Considering what I've gained from the board it's a very small offer. :)

Laura,

I just checked and it looks like I could get it for $50 plus about $10 shipping.

I don't NEED an airbrush, but it seems cheap to start a new hobby or use to touch up the scratches on my car... lol

How could/would we pay you? Do you take credit cards (I would add a few $$ to cover your processing charges)?

Thanks for the great offer!

If you are high bidder you can pay me via PayPal. I think my processing charge is 3% of the total + $0.30. Or you could mail a check. I wonder if it would fit in the Flat Rate Priorty Mail boxes from the post office? That would only be $7.70 to ship plus insurance/tracking if you want it.

We can figure something out. :)

An air brush is the only way to go with cerdec. You will want to get an EXTERNAL MIX airbrush because the cerdec clogs up an internal mix gun VERY quickly. That is the reason the pre-mixed spray cans were no good; you spray for 10 seconds and spend 3 minutes cleaning out the nozzle to continue for another 10 seconds. I have a Paashe air brush, and it is great; it has not clogged yet. You can order one direct off the 'net.

Please explain "external" mix to me.

Thanks

The correct term is "single action". The liquid you are spraying does not flow through the inside of the airbrush, it is mixed externally with the air right at the tip. Here is the link to the page: The brush I have is the HS#1L.

Chuck,

This is an old thread but did you ever do anything with the airbrush and Cermark? I am curious as I just got an airbrush and some of theCermark colors for glass/tile and the metal marking one. I also got a number of bottles to keep each color in, hoping that I can keep cleanup to a minimum. I undertand they have a very long shelf-life and only may require thining. I haven't had time yet to test my theories, I just got the stuff last month.

JIm,
I did in fact get an airbrush, but have not tried it with the cermark. I ordered the cermark in bulk but didn't get around to using it.

Sorry I cannot help. :-(

Jim - We use an airbrush to apply CerMark all the time - did you have a specific question that needed answering about airbrushing CerMark? We are using CerMark to engrave Stainless Steel boat parts.

Joe,

No nothing specific, I just wanted to see if the airbrush technique worked and see who had experience with the medium. I had been through two spray cans that had clogged with more than half remaining and was reluctant to get back and try it again. The bulk material and airbrush seemed the best way to go. I purchased some of the colors too and my plan was to leave each in its own bottle and then just clean the brush itself. A lot of the things I've done have been onesies or just a couple and the expense of the product plus the clean-up that would be required with an airbrush concerned me. Glad to know someone is using it successfully!

I use a lot of cerdec and theramark. I use the harbor freight $5 airbrush. It works great for this. You have to thin it a lot, but you learn the consistancy after a while.

What do you use to thin it?

Jim - I agree with James that you do need to thin the CerMark - I normally thin it quite a bit less than they recommend. Only a very thin coat of CerMark will give you nice black lettering. We use an inexpensive air brush
system. Nothing fancy needed to spray this stuff. Biggest problem is that it does separate out quickly and you need to be able to shake it up. I use a plastic bottle (they type you can buy at a Dollar store to dispense catchup or mustard) for mixing the CerMark - then pour into the small bottle attached to the air brush. If you are only doing a one of two small items, I would suggest you just use a foam brush - we do that for small single stuff and it works well. You will need to clean up the air brush system each time you use it. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer anything else.

Joe
