For as long as I've been in the engraving industry, especially the awards segment of the industry, lighter fluid has been a staple.

Products such as Ronsonal and Zippo, have commonly been used as a solvent, to remove adhesive residue and to clean plates, which are often used for award plaques etc.

Because of its highly evaporative properties, lighter fluid leaves very little residue.

The main ingredient in "Lighter Fluid" is Naptha. Naptha can be found at your local hardware or home improvement centers, such as Home Depot etc.

What I do, is buy a container of Ronsonol or Zippo lighter fluid. The reason I buy the name brand is to get the handy container. When the "real stuff" is gone, I remove the cap and replace the fluid from a can of Naptha.

For roughly the price of a container of Zippo or Ronsonol, you can get a quart of Naptha, which will allow you to replace the contents of the Zippo or Ronsonol container many, many times.

Keep in mind that Naptha is a chemical. Use in well ventilated areas, etc.

Naptha - very inexpensive - very useful to have around your shop.

Less flamable but as effective is low odor paint thinner. It is a great cleaner and beats the so called 'orange' based solvents. Read those lables, 'Contains petrolium distillates', read as paint thinner.

It can also be easily stored in those old lighter fluid cans.
