If you mean black brass with a pinhole, magic marker really does not cut it. At an angle it will reflect a red-black and will be obvious.
Since I cut most of my own plaque plates, I would complain to the source. I have had that only once with Main Trophy and it was replaced with absolutely no problem.
With the fancy plaque plates that come with some plaques, I have had it a little more often. The suppliers grumble and usually replace the plate. In a jam I sometimes use the plate and get lucky that the engraving goes over the pinhole, not often. What I really hate is a scratch that is under the masking and not obvious when masked. I have seen that in Chinese made goods, but not in American made.
