I just tried sandblasting glass for the first time. I bought a cabinet and 70 grit aluminum oxide. I then put three layers of 1" painters masking tape over a flat piece of glass. I lasered a logo through the tape and then sandblasted the image for about 10 seconds. When I peeled off the tape I was amazed at how great it looked for my first time. My question is why wouldn't you use the masking tape instead of something more expensive like rapidmask?

We use paper based vinyl application tape , however there is a fine line between getting a decent depth in the blasting vs eroding the tape.
When we laser the tape , it leaves a depoisit on the glass and we know we have it just right when the blasting clears that deposit which is quite easy to see in the cabinet.
For really heavy duty blasting , I use polyester based vinyl (most of the silver or gold mirror finish ones are polyester) and laser thru that , will withstand massive blasting.

Can you tell me where you get the vinyl from?

Just make sure it is polyester based; you don't want the normal sign viny in that it contains PVC"s which will damage your laser, and oh ya, the fumes will also damage you!

Good News...

I have introduced a new "laser-safe" masks that offers a removable, low tack adhesive for deep sandblasting. Everyone is right out sign vinyl...remember its too high tack, hard to remove, leaves residue if left on too long, but most important, yes it contains PVC. After talking to our manufacturers, PVC can be harmful and cause corrosion, but only if you let your cleanly go to the waysides. Always clean your lenses, and have a great exhaust system installed. Using sign vinyl will not harm your equipment if you use it sparingly.

But now, everyone has have our "BLASTOFF" mask. It allows your laser to create the stencil right on the brick, etc. and sandblasting upto 1" in depth. You can even paint fill before removing.
