300+ messages in the Vegas thread! I can't wait!

I thought maybe I could pull out here and get a couple folks to tell us about some suggested side trips to make while we are in Vegas. We have tickets to see "O" and, of course, plan to do The Beach and Quarks, but I recall someone talking about Red Rock Canyon? Where is it, how long of a drive? We are renting a car and want to get in some scenery.

My brain is already racing at all the lists I have to make to get ready! We leave Wednesday morning!

Can't wait to see all the new stuff! And all of you, of course!

Lisa,
Harv & I are the Red Rock Canyon lovers. Between 30-45 minutes depending on where you start from. Also Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. Take the tour. It is interesting. I think the drive is about an hour.
When do you arrive and when are you leaving? Set aside a large block of time to walk the strip and explore the hotels. It is fun to walk the strip at night.

My wife and I are already in Vegas. Tomorrow we're taking a trip to Death Valley, I hear that it's not too far maybe 2 hours, I'll let you know how it turns out. Red Rock is really awesome, a new vista at every turn, if you're up to a hike check out the ruins of a settler's home at Pine Creek (it's in the park).

Thanks Dee. We get in Wednesday afternoon and leave Monday morning. So we should have time for some exploring!

I forget the name of it, but we drove up to a ski area several years ago from Vegas, not too far either. That is if you are into snow. It is beautiful as well.

That would be Mt Charleston. You can see for miles from the overlooks. Take a jacket; it may be 100+ in Vegas, but chilly up on the mountain.

Red rock is nice, just take charleston blvd (about 1 mile north of sahara off LV blvd) all the way west (maybe 15-20 miles??) and you will see a turn off on the right to the loop (once you are on the loop, it is one way, so you have to finish it) (unless they changed that??).

Also valley of fire is real nice (like red rock but on steroids) but it is a good 1 hour drive from vegas.

Zion national park is also gorgeous but it is 3 hrs from vegas.

Joyce,

The trip to Zion is worth the ride. I've usually gone there for a couple of days after the ARA show.

Won't be able to make it this year. :'-(

If you take Interstate 15 North from Vegas, you will run into some really beautiful areas. Last year, The Queen and I drove from Salt Lake City to Vegas for the Show. Stopped at Zion and Bryce Canyon and kicked some tires. We did not get enough time to really explore the Virgin River area in northern AZ. If I remember correctly, we weren't 45 minutes north of the Strip and we were in some beautiful areas.

Tomorrow we are flying into Phoenix. Then we will drive up to Vegas for Wed., Thurs., Friday. Then escape back into northern AZ. I would like to hit Flagstaff then head towards eastern AZ. Work our way down to Tucson then back to Phoenix and back to northern WI. God I hope it is warm. It will be warmer than here, but I hope sweaty hot warm. See you at the show.

If you are going to be near Flagstaff, you should go to Sedona, it is gorgeous and worth seeing.

I think it is on our hit list. From what I have heard, the red rocks are very impressive. I have also heard that other than that, it has a lot of shops. I guess I won't need to slow down much B-)
