Hi everyone - I'm having a funky problem and believe it's a Photograv issue. Every time I process this image, weird ghostly white streaks appear in the black background. It never appears the same no matter how many times I process it.

I'm choosing "black painted acrylic" as the material as that is the option you pick when the intended material is black marble.

The photographer I'm working with actually provided this file to me so there is a possibility of something behind these photos but before I knock on her door, I thought I'd check with all of you to see if anyone has had this problem before.

Thanks in advance for your help! I tried to attach the simulation here so you can see the problem but the upload is timing out. If anyone wants me to send the simulation directly to them, let me know your email. Thank you!!!!!

Holly

If your timing out you probably need to resize your picture to around 50k.

Since I posted, I think it might be a memory issue on my PC. Yet something else to buy....

Thanks anyway!

Could be that the black isn't 100% black, maybe try increasing the contrast (lights lighter, darks darker) before photograving.

I assume you know not to resize after processing it.

Before processing it, make sure that the number of pixels horizontal and vertical is divisible by 4. Corel 9 has a quirk that sometimes turns up as a white line if the size is off. (I used to have that problem but no longer. I have increased memory to 512K since and think that is what solved the problem.)

Re-sampling to get the image under 50K as suggested may be the solution for you.

Holly,

Do the streaks appear in the image on your screen, or on the lasered image?

I had a similar issue on my engraving, and it turned out to be a power/speed setting that needed to be adjusted a little.

Hi Cody -

It appeared on the screen every time. I figured it must have been a memory issue...that and being fed up to *here* that I decided to throw caution to the wind and just send it to the laser. Turned out totally fine!

I did call Epilog - they were great - turns out 512K RAM while running Windows XP AND add into that running Corel 12 is not a good combo. I doubled my RAM yesterday and all is well today!

Thanks for responding!

Thanks for these tips, Harvey. It all turned out to be memory (see below) but I've already jotted down some notes on your experience in case something else comes up! Thank you!

Holly,

I'm very glad you got the problem fixed!

You've also pointed out something that I've been putting off doing...upgrading my RAM. I only have 512M, and I'm running XP / SP2 with X3. I've started doing some of the routine cleanup stuff, like getting rid of programs that I don't use (some big ones!), and defragging the hard drive.

Looks like it's time to dust off the ol' wallet...

And I recently upgraded to 512Mb. I guess I live in the past.

I was shocked when switching from 128Mb to 512Mb that WinXP then used about 350Mb for the operating system and took far longer to boot due to the extra RAM.

Windows always was a pig, but XP is a champion pig.

P.S. I do run X3 with some other programs simultaneously with no apparent problems yet. Maybe I am just lucky. Hope I did not just jinx it.

I hope not, too.

I just ordered another Gig of RAM for each of my systems (I'm only running 512M on each now). Maybe that will help a little with my speed problems.

Now if only MY memory could be enhanced...

You guys are too much!

I bit the bullet and upgraded to a gig of RAM which is the max my laptop will allow. I tend to shut down/restart apps all day rather than leave them running - which is probably not helping the memory issue. I'm definitely seeing a difference in performance and/or response time. It's a heck of a lot faster than with just 512! I had no appreciation for how much a pig XP was until now...

Shutting down an application is supposed to free up the memory that the program uses, it is a good thing. Only when Corel 9, (maybe others), crashes and closes is the memory still reserved and unusable.

Yes, there will probably be a whole new 'Vista' of problems.

I just added 1GB to my pc at home, and it helped a lot!

Dell sold me 2 sticks of 512MB for my shop pc, but I only have two slots...one of which already had a 512MG stick. So, I have an extra 512 that I can't use. I'm gonna call Dell today to get them to take it back.

When looking for memory, you can purchase from the vendor (Dell, HP, etc) for more $ or you can use www.crucial.com or www.memoryx.com both have very good memory and prices.
