Anyone get your sample of LaserPly?

I just got mine this week... I did a couple small tests with my 4x6 piece last night. Engraves quite nice and very black as described in this post: http://www.engravingetc.org/forum/index.php?webtag=EE&msg=4502.1 The sample was engraved in two passes and I was able to engrave a single pass on my 30w at 100P and 25S. I have to say I am very impressed with the results. At the introductory price of $20 for a 12x18 sheet I'm not sure if I will be using much of it. I wonder if it will ever be incorporated into plaques. If you black color fill now this would certainly eliminate that. Brian

LaserPly does seem a bit pricey, but between the price and the fact that there aren't (so far) pre-fab plaque boards, that should be enough to keep others away and you'd have a very unique product to offer. To all interested parties..... Thank you for your patience concerning LaserPly. We had to slow down a little to make sure we've got it right. The web site is up now for those who are interested. Samples are on the way. Your input is highly valued. It is a bit pricy I know but the black core along with the satin finish on both sides makes it unique in a lot of ways. It is a product without a market. We realize it will take some time for engravers to develope their own ideas. You can get a lot of small attractive items out of a 12 x 18 sheet. Rather than calling, I think these questions might be of interest to others in the forum: 1. What kind of finish is on the wood and is it considered weather resistant... not direct rain bu to use as a small sign on the outside of an office? 2. I have a motorized pantograph..... would the "standard" rotary bits for plastic work with this material? Thanks!! "Don't believe everything you think!"

Sharp acrylic/flex bits and a slow x/y speed can cut most wood very beautifully. The key word is 'sharp'. Philadelphia, PA (Really Bensalem) When you finally understand it completely... it changes.

At this time, we are using a pre-cat lacquer...not intended for exterior use. However, we can leave the panels unfinished so that anyone can laser, sand and then apply an exterior finish. There would be a savings here due to less handling on our part.
High speed rotary engraving works beautifully with a very sharp bit.

George, Thank you for sending a sample of LaserPLY. It's neat stuff. Holds very fine laser detail, with very good contrast. I think the material is along the lines of Ikon Metal, in that, it's a fairly expensive substrate, without much of a defined use, as of yet. Ikon Metal is holding a contest, in which users of the material will find creative ways to use the product for awards. The results will be shown at the next ARA Las Vegas show, in February. Good idea. I had kinda the same thought. 1st place winner gets 1 week all expense paid trip to Galveston Island, Texas. 2nd place winner gets 2 weeks all expense paid trip to Galveston Island............Just kidding....we know we have a product that has no end user demand for now. But we also have a lot of faith in engravers and their desire to show their customer base new ideas. Thanks for the heads up on Ikon Metal.

George, That's a sense of humor, after my own heart. :-) Since the product is light in color, although it would require another step in production and cost, it seems like a good contender for a cross-platform application, such as using either OEM laser toner and a special transfer paper, or a sublimatable coating, which would allow people to apply full color images, then use a laser for lettering or logos etc. David "The Stunt Engraver" Lavaneri DGL Engraving Port Hueneme, CA

The Gerber company makes a graphics machine called the Gerber Edge. With it, you can create beautiful 4 color labels or emblems on very thin clear milar. It will then vector cut those immages to fit whatever shape or dimension needed. The Edge is more common to the sign industry. LaserPly works real well with silk screening or lasering around a nice gold milar. My daughter is a college student. I made some beautiful small frat paddles (6 in.) that she showed to some frat houses to use for fund raisers. It's going real well for her. Could be because she's a pretty girl...but what the heck. A sale is a sale!
